Now that all the shops are reopen I’m planning on picking up a pair shortly. I’ve only ever really work €20 pairs out of Lifestyle sports and the likes, but this time I’d like to get a decent pair. The only problem is that I’ve no idea what to look for. Anyone got any recommendations for a guy in his early 30s, slim face if it makes any difference..

    Budget €2-300

I think a lot of it depends on the shape of your face!

Go polaroid what ever you do. Can’t go to wrong with a pair of ray bans imo.

Polarised is what you're after, Polaroid is a brand of glasses. I think all Polaroid brand glasses are polarised, but it can be confusing in-store if you're looking for another brand but with polarised lenses.

Prada, Oakley, Persol, Dragon and Rayban all make great men's glasses. For a slim face I'd stay away from aviator styles, they can be a bit overpowering as they come down quite far on the face. Rayban do make different sizes in their aviators but not all shops have them in my experience.

Are you looking for something sporty or more stylish?

Brown Thomas have their sale on at the moment, as well as buy one get second pair 30% off on certain styles.

It's easy, really, just a couple of things:

    - Don't blindly go with "fashion", things that are popular might not suit your face at all. Plenty of lads (and even more girls) walking around with oversized and/or misshapen sunglasses for their face. Go to a store or two and try a few styles on. Don't be afraid to ask for an "opinion" if you're unsure.

    - Watch out with polarised lenses: depending on which direction their polarization works, they might filter out LCD screens almost completely. Not a real issue until a few years ago - you just remove your glasses when you're working on the computer, but today LCDs are pretty much everywhere - your phone screen, the car's instrument cluster, road signs and so on. They might appear very dim or totally dark through polarised glasses...

    .

Yeah you can get smaller versions of some Aviators and Wayfarers for those of us with smaller faces

I like Randolph Engineering aviators (worn by Liev Schrieber in Ray Donovan) - very classy.

And then there is Persol, worn by the king of cool himself, Steve McQueen.

The RE are excellent glasses, but impossible to find a pair to try on in Ireland I'd say. Maui Jim would be on the same level and are fairly common in opticians here. Using their Cliff House model now. The lenses are superb. They're expensive, but like RE you're paying the manufacturing premium.

Most other glasses are going to be a Luxottica brand (Oakley, Rayban etc. etc.), high end fashion brands e.g Tom Ford being Marcolin, De Rigo etc. They won't be as good, but possibly as expensive.

The last two Ray Bans I've bought, I've been really disappointed with the optics. They were New Wayfarers, loved the look but got rid of them quickly enough. I've heard people moan about the drop in quality with Luxottica, but my wife newish Aviators are decent enough. Also, I still use a pair of Oakley Flak jackets which are excellent.

If you know what kind of shape you want I found TK Maxx online very good, I bought some nice Lacoste and Gucci glasses for a very good price, obviously as is always the case with TK Maxx it's dependent f what is in stock at that time. I used parcel motel to deliver to Ireland then.

Because of my poor eyesight, I never thought I'd ever get to own a pair of sunglasses. I was offered 50% off a prescription set in 2018 and opted for a set of Aviators. They're amazing.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

I've had about 3 pairs of Oakleys, Stolen, lost and lost.

Great sun glass's get polarized lens and there great for a hangover to.

I hate Ray-Ban sunglasses, always found with them they constantly slip off. I like Roka and Bloc sunglasses.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,573 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Spend the full 300 on them.

It will ensure you are more disappointed when they are lost , broken or nicked.

Expensive sunglasses are a mugs game.

Buy a non brand polarised pair. Buy ones that suit your face. The icon on the side or etched into the glass is meaningless.

I agree, often you will find non branded sunglasses in sports shops, men's online shops like J&C that fit a lot better.

I love raybans. Have a pair of aviators and they look really cool. Have a pair of aviators and love them too. Would find the aviators more comfortable if I was wearing sunglasses for a full day.

I used to buy cheap glasses from TK Maxx. Quality was probably fine and they were branded but I never spent more than 30 quid on them. They always broke. Since I got a pair of raybans as a present I bought a hard case on pennies and have never broken either pair. Because they were a bit more expensive I probably take care of them better

This is important, you gotta have a case and USE it! I used to work in a sunglasses shop and people would ask me how to stop glasses getting scratched or broken. The answer is simple and boring, when they're not on your face, they're in the case :pac: Not on your head, hanging out your t-shirt or sitting on the table. And only clean on with a proper cleaning cloth, not on your clothes.

I'm on my 3rd pair of Maui Jim Makaha, best sunglasses ever IMO. They have great eye coverage & are close but not on top of the cheek, extremely light, polorized but you can still see with them inside & are anti glare.
Also are epic for jogging or any sports activity as they dont slip!
Main fault, because the lens are frameless you gotta be careful with them, but that goes without saying when paying a reasonably hefty price for any sunglasses.
Also have Ray Ban wayfarers, they are stylish but I only use them occasionally as i find them rigid & heavy on the nose bridge after a short while Vrs the Maui Jim's which youd forget were on!

Are expensive 150 euro ray ban aviators any more resistant to damage , bending breaking? Any sunglasses i get are always sat on dropped or bent in some way lol I allways get those aviator style metal ones. Are they a false economy or will expensive ones break just as readily as 15 euro ones?

I bought some Roberto Martin sunglasses in Spain a few years ago. They were about 50 euro I think. Polarised. They have lasted well, excellent quality lenses. And clean up well. They are heavy but comfortable to wear all day. I generally use them for driving now.

Three years ago I upgraded to some Bolle flyair. I think they cost me about 120 at the time. I see now they can be got for 70. They are an outstanding pair of glasses. I wear them all the time in outdoor situations. They have proven indestructible so far. Have sat on them, my child pulls and plays with them. Very clear vision. Ultra light on your face. After 4 years of constant wear I have noticed small scratches on lenses this year. Very happy with them to be honest. Might upgrade next summer.

If you're still looking, I seen this Dublin based store: https:\\sunglassesrepublic.ie A good pair of sunglasses is always a solid investment, definitely avoid anything cheap that doesn't have UAV protection!

If you want a decent pair for cheap I'd highly recommend the "Merrys Unisex Retro" on Aliexpress for €12, you can stare almost directly at the sun there that good no worrying about them as can just order another one if I break them.

I bought a couple of pairs of Oakleys in my time for 200-250 each. I won't be doing it again tbh. My next pair will non branded ones for a fraction of the price that do the same thing.

Well at least it ll be protected from the sun, I've only ever bought cheap, currently using shaded safety glasses from local builder providers, doing the job, debating whether to buy decent pair for driving
