Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Hi,

    We are interested in getting a Cav or a Malshi. Could anyone recommend any good breeders close to the Dublin area?

    For personal reasons, we do not want to get a rescue dog as we had a bad experience before in terms of behaviour and damage to the house.

    Any advice would be fantastic!

    A Malshi isn’t a recognised breed so unfortunately you won’t be able to find a reputable breeder for them, but if you look for the cavalier King Charles breed club, or contact the Irish kennel club, they should be able to point you in the right direction for breeders. Make sure to find out what health checks have taken place for the parents are ckc are very prone to a lot of health problems!

    I can vaguely understand why you might not want to rescue an older dog if you've had a negative experience in the past.

    With that in mind, would you consider putting your name down at as many local rescues as possible, so that if and when they get a puppy of your preferred breed into their care, you can adopt one of those?

    My friend had her heart set on a Bichon but didn't want to put money in the pockets of puppy farmers. She did the above, and had to wait about 4 months iirc, but eventually she got a call to say that a pregnant Bichon had been surrendered and she got first pick of the pups, when they were old enough to leave their mum.

    Again there is no such breed as a Malshi OP.. so you wont be able to find a good breeder..

    just on the damage to your home... we bought a pure bred fabulous black cocker spaniel, IKC registered etc - gorgeous boy... 8 weeks we brought him home......he DESTROYED our house months on end... its not the breed OP.... most puppies will do this and older dogs with separation anxiety (14 years later and we wouldn't part with him for the world)

    its all about training, routine and consistency with this 99% of dogs / puppies will be amazing pets all its takes is time and effort.

    its a shame you rule out rescuing... many have lovely puppies waiting for a new home and not all rescue dogs have behaviour issues etc again you need to do proper research

    It's no guarantee that your next dog won't have issues with destructive behaviour. In terms of actual behaviour of the dog, the better the breeder, the better the temperament should be.

    Malshi's aren't a recognized breed (as said above) so you pretty much won't find a well bred dog of this mix in this country, you'd mainly come across puppy farmers or backyard breeders, which are the types you wouldn't want to be giving money to! Is there any reason you wouldn't consider a Shih Tzu or a Maltese, rather than a mix of the two?

    Cavaliers are also a bit more on the unhealthy side, worse if you go to a breeder who isn't passionate about their breed, you would want to source a breeder who has done the relevant health tests required for the breed, like Episodic Falling Syndrome (EF), Curly Coat & Dry Eye (CC/DE), Syringomyelia and heart issues, for example.

    Also as mentioned above, you should contact the Irish Kennel Club/breed club to find a suitable breeder. Don't expect litters to be ready asap and there is a chance you may have to travel outside of Dublin.

Stay away from donedeal or anyone selling online, they do suffer from health issues so do your homework.... ask the breeder lots of questions, not guaranteed it will not give you heartache in the future but may limit any problems. I personally love the breed and am on my 2nd a beautiful ruby, would have no other breed. :D Good luck.
