Welcome to the Hobby Radio Forum.

This forum is intended for discussion of Hobby Radio (and related Electronics) in all its forms, for example Amateur Radio, PMR, CB, SWL, and scanning, among other things.

Please note that some activities related to Hobby Radio are prohibited by law, be it by reception or transmission, and any discussion of such activity will mean, at least, a ban from this forum.

Comprehensive legal information is available on www.comreg.ie

    Some basic Radio rules:
    • It is illegal to pass on to third parties any information received while monitoring transmissions not intended for you, or which you do not have a license to receive.
    • Reception of said transmissions is in itself illegal (such as Garda, Emergency Services etc.)
    • The discussion of Emergency Service frequencies, will result in a warning. If a person continues to discuss them, they will get an immediate ban from the forum.
    • Unlicensed transmissions, or transmissions which exceed permitted power levels, generate unacceptable levels of interference, or fall outside permitted frequencies are also, naturally illegal.
Now that that is out of the way, the usual rules regarding personal abuse etc, apply, as with practically the rest of boards.

In the event of any problem or issue use the report post button report.gif beside the post. Do NOT respond on Thread. This sends a PM (Private Message) that you can edit to the Moderators of the Forum.

    General points:
    Boards.ie rules apply http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=98
Use clear polite English, no abuse, foul or rude language. No lol or txt abbreviations/spk. Normal Radio voice abbreviations only in context.

    Final Rule: No Text Talk

    Enjoy the forum :)

If you have a licence and transmit according to licence that's fine.
    Licences
PMR :Taxi, Quarry, Security and similar licenced users.
    Radio Amateur/Wireless Experimenter/Ham
    Marine
    Aircraft
Community Radio on Band II VHF/FM
FWALA: 3.6GHz and 10.6GHz Wireless Broadband
MMDS available: (as used by SCTV, not UPC/Chorus/NTL) 11.7GHz .. 12.5GHz Digital TV
"Deflector": PAL UHF Analogue. No new ones, ends 2009 due to DTT.
    DTT: RTENL only
    DAB: RTE only
    VHF/FM: Commercial Radio
    Radar: Aviation authority only
Point to Point Microwave links: ETSI approved gear and prove a need.
Satellite Earth Station: TV broadcasters and ISPs

RTE FM Radio and an analogue TV doesn't use a normal Comreg licence.

    Licence Free
    • ETSI/CE marked CB for the Irish Market, unmodified . It can have an size vertical, but a Yagi/Beam is forbidden. The UK CB27/81 channels overlap with COmmunity band. Only the newer UK /EU band is legal for transmission without a Licence. UK is FM only. Ireland is 4W FM/SSB or 1W AM
    • PMR446 unmodifed with original built in aerial.
    • Video Senders CE mark 2.4GHz only
    • WiFi 2.4GHz / 5.8GHz only
    • Toys 49MHz CE mark unmodified
    • Remote Control CE mark 27MHz
    • SRD 433MHz CE mark
    • SRD 864MHz CE Mark
    • Ultra low power FM transmitter with CE mark (like iTrip), Stereo 88MHz to 108MHz, unmodified and original power / aerial. A short Range Device.
    • VSAT (very small aperture Terminal): Two way data for Internet. Approved gear.

Any discussion or sourcing of transmitters must match one these categories.

So you can discuss getting a "Shortwave Transmitter" if you are a licensed "wireless experimenter"/"Radio Amateur", or you can discuss the technology used in Radar, TV, Broadcast or RTE DAB transmitter, though here is better: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=40

You can't discuss "after burners", P.A., Linear, beams or Yagi, or transmission on "freeband" on CB radios.
