Panasonic home phone no dial tone

Hi all, recently purchased a new Panasonic home phone from Argos (with BT to Irish converter for the cable) but not getting any dial tone when connected....we have broadband and phone going into a splitter box fixed to the wall....any ideas on why this might be would be much appreciated?! Thanks...
