    [Xbox One]

    Yooka-Laylee

It is my second time playing it. I actually played it around this time 2 years ago on PC. It's a good fun game and I hope the team release another as in my opinion there are not enough 3D platformers this gen.

    Game: The Messenger
    Platform: Nintendo Switch

I was put off this for months because I knew how hard Ninja Gaiden was and didn't think I'd like this due to its obvious callback to the series.

But I decided to try it, and I'm glad I did.

It's the right amount of challenge for me. Not too hard but not overly easy, either.

I was pleasantly surprised by the big twist half way through the game where it turns from a linear action platformer to a Metroidvania-style game. I also thought the visuals were stunning and I love how it jumps from 8-bit to 16-bit visuals from time to time.

It's definitely one of the most unique games I've played this year and surprisingly lengthy.

(Sorry for the double post. Couldnt edit the previous one)

Game: Ori and the Blind Forest
    Platform: Xbox One

I honestly did not think I'd go back to my Xbox again. The last game I beat from beginning to end was Far Cry 5 (before cleaning up on Far Cry 4, which I forgot to finish) and that was April last year.

Decided to dust it off and get myself a 3-month Game Pass sub for €1.

Completely forgot Ori existed (again, dusty Xbox) so I said I'd try it out.
Kept me busy most of the weekend and rolled credits tonight.

My god this game was beautiful to look at as well as listen to - that soundtrack was amazing.

I do not have a huge track record for beating a metroidvania-style of game so this may mark one of very few I've done, and I'm very happy I did.

The only gripe I had was the checkpoint system at the end of each "act", as it were. You have no way of saving midway and it really is a test of your skill. One mess up and you have to do the segment from the start. It was the only trial-and-error-ey bit of the game I didn't enjoy that much but the rest of it was top notch.

Very much looking forward to the sequel.

    Stunning game.

I bought the DLC for Spider Man as it was on sale. It was enjoyable to a point but it was really more of the same with too much filler content. Doing so many random crimes is a bit of a pain.

I also completed Flower on PS Now. I'm not sure what to think of it. It was relaxing at the start but it did become a little boring as it went on. I didn't put in the time to find all of the secret flowers, maybe if I did I would have enjoyed it more.

How is PS Now? Does it run okay? I have a 15mB connection and have been reluctant on the idea of streaming games in this manner. Flower also looks gorgeous and I'd be fearful of the streaming-quality ruining the game's aesthetic.

It mostly runs fine for me, with the very occasional lag. I'm on a 100mb line. I wouldn't be playing games that require fast reactions on it but I find it worth the money. You can download PS4 games so no streaming needed for them. Plus you can cancel your sub at any time. I have cancelled and re-joined a few times now based on how much time I have available to play.

    Game: Shakedown: Hawaii
    Platform: Nintendo Switch

I was anticipating this game for a good few months after getting a taste of its predecessor (Retro City Rampage)

It looks good, plays well, controls are tight and the music is brilliant.

But the general loop of the game wasn't really that fun.

All I found myself doing was,
    - Go here
    - Watch cutscene
    - Buy this business
    - Watch cutscene
    - Buy that lot
    - Watch cutscene
    - Shoot these guys
    Etc. Etc.

Don't get me wrong, the cutscenes are short and snappy, but there are so many of them so frequently. They interrupt a good chunk of the game.

It wasn't a terrible game but it wasn't as great as I had hoped, after all the hype over it (within its fanbase, of course)

I doubt I'll go back in a hurry.

Beat the main game in 10 hours and at 71% completion. I won't be doing the 100.

The story and music were brilliant, very interesting plot device as well.

I finished Knack last night. I'm not sure where the hate for this game comes from. I enjoyed it and it was a perfect game to play after an open world game. Yes it's simplistic but I've always had a soft spot for platformers. I got every trophy I could on a single play through. I never go for a platinum trophy in a game that requires more than one play through, it's just not fun to do so.

    Game: Spec Ops: The Line
    Platform: PC

Was just casually browsing my Steam library when I saw this game show up, I had no idea I had it.
It was pretty fun. Nothing special, just a typical 3rd-person shooter with the lightest of squad tactics available.
The story was very interesting as well.

Most of the mechanics were very Gears-like and it brought back old habits from playing those games religiously back in the day.

Definitely one I regret not playing when it came out first.

Only one game in the bag for me this year so far - spent about 60 hours at it, from December through the end of April!

    PS4

Horizon: Zero Dawn - great, great game, really loved the story, the world and most of the gameplay. My type of gaming experience :D

Crappy story. Excellent gameplay. The job system is just fantastic fun to mess around with. Last dungeon was good fun and a challenge but once you are powered up the last boss is a total pushover and anticlimax.

It's a good breezy 35 hour RPG and a highlight of the series.

    Game: Tetris Effect
    Platform: PlayStation 4

    Let me comfirm something.

You do not need VR to enjoy this game. It is 100% not required and it does not deter the game in any way, shape or form to play without it. Tetris Effect is an outstanding game both visually and from an audio standpoint - the music is beautiful to listen to.

I highly recommend this. And if you do get it, may I also recommend playing with headphones on. The sound, my god - amazing.

    Get this game.

Shadow of the Colossus remake PS4 - Such a beautiful game that's sometimes let down by temperamental controls (not to the extent that it impacts your enjoyment of the game though).

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves remastered PS4 - A big improvement from Uncharted 1 with likeable characters, witty dialog and plenty of action.

God of War PS4 - An absolute masterpiece and a very different approach from previous games in the series. Definitely one of the defining games of this console generation.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - Incredible voice acting along with a great storyline make this the best of the first 3.

What Remains of Edith Finch - I would never have played this if it hadn't been released as one of the free PSN games for May but am I glad that I did. I almost deleted it after the first 20 mins but then something clicked and the game really plays with your emotions. A thoroughly beautiful experience and one that I recommend especially if you already have it as one of your PSN games.

I decided to pick up my Vita again and finish some games over the next while.

The first one I completed was Bastion. It's a simple yet fun game that looks incredible on the Vita screen. It's an action game with different weapons you can collect and a narrator that speaks throughout the different things you, it's maybe a bit too easy. Worth the few euro though.

The Lego Movie Videogame is pretty self explanatory. The Vita version is different from the PS4 version in that it's a series of very short levels but as with all Lego games it's both easy and fun. I got the platinum trophy in this one.

Game: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
    Platform: PlayStation 2

I always regarded the "City Stories" series of GTA games to be overlooked and underappreciated. LCS is a top notch instalment with plenty going on in it. It doesn't do much in the way of innovation but you have to remember this was originally a PSP game, so it was fairly packed in terms of content.

My major complaint is the frame rate is not good, at all. It barely sticks to 30 and doesn't stay above 20 even when driving around. Even San Andreas had a more consistent frame rate than this and that was a bigger game.

Thankfully I can overlook it because the fun factor outweighs it, in my eyes.

Gonna be diving into Vice City Stories after this one

It's my second time playing it. Played it on PC previously. Good game. The last chapter was not nearly as bad as I remember it. I remember dragging that object for ages and having a bad time with enemies but I found it quite easy this time.

I bought Virginia in the previous PSN sale after a recommendation on Boards. It's a walking simulator with the story based around a new FBI agent investigating a missing persons case with her new partner, who's very much a Fox Mulder type. I was really enjoying it until the end when the story went a bit too ambiguous for my liking. Even reading online there are countless interpretations which is not something I'm a big fan of. It's well worth playing but prepare to be confused at the end. It's also a very easy platinum trophy.

Good game. I have been playing it on and off for a few months now. I only started this game as a couple of months ago I finished the first and it is such a good series that I was sorry I was so late playing them.

Game: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
    Platform: PlayStation 2

Unpopular opinion: Vice City Stories is better than Vice City....... mechanically, at least. Being the final game released in the "3D Era", long-overdue QOL improvements were made:
    • Trip Skip
    • Checkpoints During Vehicle Side-Missions
    • Buy Back your Weapons After you Die/Get Busted

I'm sure there were others, I just can't think of them as I write this. Storywise it was pretty bland, and Lance is way more annoying in this one (in Vice City, the sequel, he is much more laid back) and, of course, since it's set in the 80s, the soundtrack was top notch. I found earning money in the game to be one of the easiest the series has to offer (alongside GTA V).

My points are all over the place but I found this game to be more enjoyable to play than VC, apart from the plot.

    Very good instalment.

    Game: INSIDE
    Platform: PlayStation 4

This marks my second playthrough of the game itself. I have it beaten on both Xbox One and PS4 now.
Brilliant all the same but my opinion of its puzzles still stand - Limbo was much more challenging.

    100% on trophies as well.
