This thread is really interesting, far from being what a poster suggested early on it's fascinating to see where people have been and why. It's even reminded me of places I'd forgotten I've been!

    Well done to the OP.

Oh, I viewed Kandahar as a Canadian facility. Complete with hockey rink and Tim Horton's.

This was the security checkpoint back in late 2009 or so.
    kandcp.jpg

Note that I am equipped with everything the Army felt I needed to enjoy my stay in Afghanistan. Note also that there is a display of prohibited items in the back on the wall, mainly knives. I had to put my knife in checked baggage, whilst the rifle, sidearm, and some 400 rounds of ammunition went through the x-ray machine.

I asked the RAF MP if he realised how stupid this was. He said yes, but he didn't make the rules.

I was there in 2001-2002 ( I can really pick'em !! ) and back again in 2009-10. We would have been routed through the "Civilian" part out to the "Visitors" area, well away from the main building's.Custom and Passport control's were pretty much perfunctionary....they were very used to us. When leaving the Country, did you fly KAD-KAB-DUBOI, and then onward's? The Tim Horton's I well remember...enjoyed their stuff in other Country's,,,but the Hockey...you mean Ice-Hockey...( what other kind, I can hear you say ) in the heat of KAD???? WOW. Plus that was some amount of kit to be carrying in the Afghan heat.....:) I just found some pics from that time too.

I won't win this thread, but I was surprised just to see how many I have passed through over the years, 108 if my calculations are correct. Nice trip down memory lane. Not really doing my bit for global warming mind you.

Yes it is very interesting, and what I was thinking was how far we have come in a relatively short space of time...The Nr's flying as mentioned here, which is only a fraction of the total Nr's, and the destinations... Fantastic !!! I remember from a long time ago, I think it cost 200 Pounds to fly from Dublin Airport to Heathrow... and air travel was out of the question for most of the population. So Ryan Air...take a bow....you have revolutionized Air Travel .

I flew to London Heathrow off season in November 1984 and the cheapest ticket available was IR£132, that had to be booked at least 2 weeks in advance and had to include a Saturday night stay.

I'm in Stansted at the moment with almost 8 hours between flights (times were changed). Can't check in until 2 hours before my flight home. Landside my refreshment options are Costa and Burger King, that's it! Seating is woefully inadequate, with spaces for no note than 50 bums so we've retreated to the Hilton for a few hours, it's seen better days but it's a damn sight better than sitting on the floor of the terminal.

I flew for the first time in 1989, Cork to Paris return with Air France cost me IR£161.00 ( found the receipt recently), I had started a new job only a few month previously and was earning the princely sum of £90.00 a week.

The cheapest flight I ever got was two leg flight to Berlin from Cork via Stansted in 2005 and cost €30.00 return, I think I was just paying for our baggage. I remember saying to my partner that it was unlikely we'd ever fly as cheaply ever again.

Hate Stansted, with a passion, staff, layout, everything. Next time hit the Radisson, only a short walk from the terminal , food is great in the Hilton but Radisson has the wine angels ;)

This one had me scratching my head for a while. I’ve counted 46, but might have been to more than one airport in some of the big cities. I could only think of five countries I’ve visited without flying. It also got me thinking about how many airlines I’ve flown with but remembering them would be tough. Some of these airports I can hardly remember anything distinguishing about them.

    Ireland
    Dublin
    Cork
    Shannon
    Knock
    Galway - a kip

    UK
    Edinburgh
Gatwick - missed a connecting flight once because I misread the departure time.
    Heathrow
    Stansted
    Luton

    Spain
    Bilbao
    Madrid
    Barcelona
    Valencia
    Malaga

    Italy
    Bergamo
    Milan Linate
    Bologna
    Treviso - nightmare queues
    Rome (da Vinci)

    Germany
    Berlin
    Düsseldorf
    Frankfurt

    Rest of Europe
    Stockholm Skavsta
    Copenhagen
    Brussels
    Prague
Warsaw - slept on the floor because I didn’t want to pay for accommodation. Not the only time!
    Paris Beauvais
    Paris Charles de Gaulle

    USA
    Boston
    New York
    Dallas Fort Worth
    Atlanta

    Chile
    Santiago
    Puerto Montt
Punta Arenas - LAN Chile was a really nice airline

    Rest of the Americans
    Havana
    Mexico DF
    Cancun
    Rio de Janeiro

    Asia
    Amman
    Tehran
Yazd - possibly the smallest. I asked someone where I should go to collect my luggage and he just pointed out a pile of bags in the corner.
    Tokyo Narita
Tokyo Haneda - The only time an airline lost my luggage (BA). It arrived a day later though.

As a rule I enjoy travelers tales and I've done a good bit of air travel myself but this thread has me bemused.
I find lists of airports posted by people I don't know strangely unfulfilling.
There must be a hundred good stories hidden away in all those lists but we will never hear them.
