RIC Police athletics / sports

Trying to trace a relative who was a member of the RIC from about 1875. Family story is that he was a "good athlete". I assume that was in police sports competitions which would probably have been held annually. Does anybody know if such sports were held, where and in which month so I could search relevant newspapers.

I would think that he would have been competing at county & provincial meetings if he were a good athlete and the results were usually posted on local newspapers. When I was researching a RIC ancestor, I was surprised to find his name appearing in the sports section of newspapers and only then had I realised that he had been competing at various meetings around the country.

You should look up The Constabulary Gazette, they have it on microfilm in the National Library: http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000112546

It's interesting to read through the issues, even just to get a feel for how things were for RIC men. I haven't looked at it in quite a while but I'm sure there were a fair few sporting reports in it. Lots of requests for transfers too as I recall! Hopefully you could find your relative in there somewhere :)

Thanks for two good leads. I must plan a trip to Dublin. I was not aware of the Constabulary Gazette.

Pity it's not online, it would be a very painstaking process manually looking through microfilm on the off-chance of a mention. I've found there's very little information available on RIC personnel, aside from the basic details in the register.
