Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    baz I spent 3 week swimming in the river as Blackrock was outside my 2k range. Now its within my 5k

    May as well keep this updated.

    Everything since the lockdown has been done in an endless pool, I was fortunate to build one three years back, and its been a saving grace this past couple of months. At least a km done every day since March. in many ways its good to keep a streak going and as we all know the water washes away stress.
    The OW is still outside my 5km zone, but I've measured and its exactly 19.99km from my bedroom to high tide at my usual beach, roll on June 8th!

    Its similar to treadmill for running- there is a current machine that you swim against. Set the pace and swim against it. There is a fair amount of turbulence, so its closer to swimming OW than a pool, and you have to take the pace setting within a certain degree of accuracy (I do my fastest "100's" at 1:14 pace which I wouldn't manage in the pool). I'm gauging it at 1km for every 20mins spent.

    A few pre-pandemic pool swims and a few in the river since the extension to 5k as it was outside my 2k. I’m more than 20k from the coast so a sea swim is a long way off.

    @Kurt, tell us a bit more about the endless pool? Was it expensive? Is it hard on the ESB bill?

    It wasn't cheap, about €14K for wooden pool and Fastlane machine (which I built in a shed similar to this). Air-to-water heat pump is very effective and keeps ESB costs down. We're a family of swimmers, live 30k from nearest pool in the countryside and I work from home... so while it was expensive initially I save a lot of time travelling to pools and obviously its perfect for a situation like now.
