Freezing rain at Aldergrove atm. Temp & dewpoint just above zero but the grass minimum temperature there was -4 °C by 6 am so the ground surface is probably still well below zero.

    how does fog affect flights?

is a runway safety issue , ie lack of visibility from the tower to taxiways, runways etc?

Can ILS not land in fog?

Fog, which is visible moisture, can greatly reduce visibility laterally and vertically. On a very basic level it is akin to driving your car in fog. You would agree that it can be more hazardous driving in fog than on a clear day, it is no different for pilots?

In order to legally shoot an instrument approach the reported visibility must be above that required as indicated on the chart based on the category of instrument approach you are shooting.

In instances where an airport is experiencing fog, they can impose LVP, low visibility procedures. At its most severe this can mean that only a single aircraft can move at any one time on the airfield. Everything is greatly slowed down for safety reasons which will always cause departure and arrival delays.

In short, it is the lack of visibility for all involved. If you want to read further about it, the crash in cork a few years back it will show you the affect fog can have, along with a relatively inexperienced crew, corporate pressure and bad decision making. It is available on the AAIU website.

Glasgow airport reporting light snow and -1c at 12:20. Temp here 8.4c. Such a difference over such a short space.

Fog (prob 40%) with 400m VIS at DUB in the forecast this evening. LVP's play havoc with the operations at DUB, but the airport may be sufficiently quiet to handle all ops with LVP's in place.

Fog has descended on Dublin now. CATIII ILS should take any arrivals without issue. Mornings are never too busy if it does persist.

Any idea why almost all of Heathrow's metars have corrections (COR) in them? They are always automatic, so if there is human input or correction then the AUTO should not appear, but it still does in all but just one or two.

No, the list included mostly snow (which was affecting those airports) and strong winds (affecting a few other airports, can't remember which ones were listed).

    All info was from Eurocontrol.

Even at a direct headwind, descending into wind like that is usually bumpy from experience.

Warnings out for areas of severe low-level turbulence shooting eastwards at 50 knots tonight. That is a pretty high forward speed for a frontal system and one reason why I think some of the TAFs may be underdone a little.

11pm TAF upgrades the wind at DUB.

    BECMG 2am-5am 230° 28kts G 46kts
    TEMPO 5am-7am 230° 32kts G 51kts

Some disruption possible, but unlikely as wind after 7am switches more westerly and weakens.

ORK has a little wind early in the night but mostly gone by the time the morning comes.

NOC 11pm TAF isn't available yet.

Belfast has some fairly brisk winds!

    TEMPO 4am-8am 210° 40kts G 58kts with Rain Drizzle and Heavy Rain

    And later in the evening

    Prob 40% 8pm-12am TEMPO
    250° 35kts G 45kts 1200m showers Rain Snow and Snow.
