Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Are the legal costs of getting a divorce calculated on the value of assets - family home, employment income etc?

    Legal costs are something of a mystery,
    It’s only after it’s all done that you will know.

    Expect to pay between 7 - 12k if using solicitor and barrister.

    Expect to pay more than that if the other party is being difficult and not agreeing to anything. The solicitors will of course bill you for every letter, every phonecall, etc. etc. and if it goes on for 2 or 3 years it will really add up.

    If there are kids, and as the legal system is so biased against fathers, many fathers are probably better off representing themselves, as you are not going to win custody of the kids or get the house etc. anyway, so why pay up to 25k when you could get similar results on your own? Might be good to use a solicitor (a good one that knows the Judge) in the beginning, but if it drags on, it is more cost effective to represent yourself, if you are male.

    I have a friend (female) who ended up paying over €40k in legal fees for their divorce due to the non-cooperation and delaying tactics of their ex-husband, who represented himself. She eventually had to get an Isaac Wunder Order to put an end to his messing, as even after the divorce was granted, he went back to try and challenge it.

    This is, of course, an extreme case. But it shows how costs can escalate. Make sure you ask any solicitor or barrister for an estimation of costs before proceeding with them. They have to give it to you. If they won't, move on.
