Check out the Improvised Music Company's website for news of upcoming gigs.

There's an interesting one coming up on April 27th 2011 in Whelan's featuring Tarab. (Interesting mix of jazz, trad and Mediterranean music). I can recommend this one!

Cool, we're running competitions for passes for Friday's Sun Ra gig at the moment. Hopefully see some of you guys down there, would be nice to have an knowledgeable Jazz crowd at the gig. I can imagine a few heads knocking about scratching their heads "hmm, this isn't house muzic" :D
A sample of what to expect for those intrigued: http://soundcloud.com/amenbrother/mike-huckaby-live-at-sun-ra

Tickets can also be bought at: http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?251031

He'll also be doing a house set on Saturday, so everybody's a winner! Anyway, apologies for the shameless plugging, I feel guilty so freebies time:

    To enter; simply pm us with an answer to the following question;

Q1: Cosmic Jazz composer, Sun Ra, led “The Arkestra” for much of his life. Name the musician from Sun Ra’s Arkestra, who led “The Arkestra” after Sun Ra’s death and who has also worked on a separate project with Carl Craig?

First correct answer from here gets a pass, ;). Peace!

"Spider" John Koerner, traditional American folk and country blues musician.

Koerner was an exciting singer, and we began playing a lot together." Coming to The Leeson Lounge, Dublin. June 7th & 8th. €15

Navigator Concert Series 2011: ECM Perspectives
    Sunday 5th June 2011 7pm

    Prices: €25, €20

    (Friends and Groups €18)

    Room: Main Auditorium

The National Concert Hall and Improvised Music Company brings the world’s finest jazz and world music performers to The Main Auditorium throughout 2011.

7pm: Trygve Seim’s The Source- Trygve Seim, sax; Øyvind Brække, trombone; Mats Eilertsen, doublebass; Per Oddvar Johansen, drums

    8.15pm: Stefano Bollani solo piano

9.30pm: Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin-Nik Bärtsch, piano, fender rhodes; Kaspar Rast, drums; Björn meyer, Bass; Andi Pupato, percussion; Sha, contrabass clarinet

A banquet to appreciate at your leisure for the bank holiday as we celebrate the renowned ECM label, a watchword in excellence in jazz and contemporary music. Three perspectives on today’s generation of ECM artists are offered here, all different yet each in their way imbued with the characteristic lyricism that defines ECM. Tenor saxophonist Trygve Seim soars as naturally as Garbarek, and is heard here in similarly uninhibited Norwegian company with The Source. The freewheeling Stefano Bollani follows, a witty and exuberant pianist blessed with amazing rhythmic resources. To close, the zen- like funk of Switzerland’s Nik Bartsch as he takes us through the gears with Ronin, a brilliantly hypnotic band that builds from the scantest motifs and tautest dynamics to unveil gorgeous rhythmic facades.

    Pre-Concert Talk: 6pm

The Navigator Series continues in July and November with concerts from AFROCUBISM and DAVE HOLLAND & PEPE HABICHUELA

Presented by the National Concert Hall in association with Improvised Music Company

I went to see the Phil Ware trio at JJ Smyths last Monday. They were absolutely great. They are playing again this Monday 20th. Go and see one of the best Irish based Jazz pianists.

For the record - while the above post does look like the person joined up just to post about Phil's gig (nothing wrong with that) - Phil himself would have too much style to pretend to be someone else on a board to promote his own gig.

In addition - Phil's trio is by far one of the finest in the country and this Monday he has legendary Scottish saxophonist Bobby Wellins guesting as the final week in bunch of 5 (I think) gigs.

All about Jazz - Bobby Wellins

So I concur - Go and see one of the finest Irish based Jazz pianists.

    The Ladies sing the Blues

Near FM is currently producing a series of documentaries that celebrates Jazz and Blues music in Dublin. This series is a follow up to the very successful Northside Blues series form 2009. Near has lined up three outstanding female acts to play in the Clontarf Yacht Club venue. On the first three Saturdays of October’11 punters will be treated to performances by Susan Tomelty, Honor Heffernan and Bree Harris respectively. All of the performances will be recorded and contribute to three one hour documentaries to be aired in December 2011. The programmes will document each of the artists featured and the Jazz and Blues scene in Dublin both past and present.

Sat October 1st - Susan Tomelty hails from a theatrical and musical family in Portaferry, Co. Down. She has a passion for singing, writing melody and performing. Susan's musical journey has taken her from her native Co. Down to Scotland, England, France, Sweden, Denmark, Nashville and all over Ireland. A pure and distinctive voice, she can cover a wide range of material but her influences are more Rhythm & Blues, Soul and Gospel.

Sat October 8th - Honor Heffernan has been performing as both a singer and actress for over 30 years now. She has been both critically and publicly acclaimed as a singer whose versatility and superior vocal ability means she is comfortable singing anything from Jazz and Blues to Rock and Folk. She has earned the reputation as Ireland's leading Jazz singer. Over the years she has played with Ireland's leading Blues, Jazz and Rock musicians including Jim Doherty and Louis Stewart.

Sat October 15th - Bree Harris has been playing the Dublin circuit for some time now. Playing a programme of Blues, Rock, Folk and Soul interspersed with her own original material. She has delighted audiences with her renditions of artistes such as Tony Joe White, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine and Bob Dylan. With her powerful voice exuding raw energy and emotion accompanied by some of Ireland's finest musicians, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Tickets to all shows are €10 and available on the door.
