My late 2013 iMac with fusion drive failed recently, and I got Mactivate to replace the HDD with an SSD.
There isn't a huge difference in speed, because the OS was running off the SSD part of the fusion drive already, but documents (now stored on the new SSD) do open a bit faster.
I've previously swapped out a HDD for an SSD on a 2006 MacBook and it was night and day.

Have to say I’m super impressed with the upgrade.

I deal with a lot of very large documents & one of the kids is into editing video. Bit of which are extremely fast now.

Previously she’d have to render overnight, that time is cut in at least half now

My documents would be a minimum of 30mb up to about 70mb with complex relationship lookups across other documents. Used to rake about two to three minutes to open and now take seconds.

Used to do these years ago usually adding in the SSD to the HDD or upgrading the internal drive to something larger, just make sure you get the temp sensor kit or you'll be using fan control software to log the fans manually, just watch out for the cables when doing it and there is also a chance to chip/crack the glass panel :).

Super fast, glad i did it

I am considering using old HDD as an external, anyone else done this ?

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

Just buy new one, your drive is old and therefore less reliable. Hdd new are cheap
