As an F30 owner (8 Speed Auto), I can tell you they are a wonderful car. I wish I had a few of its features in my first car as it would have saved a few scrapes - reverse sensors and hill start assist for example.

Given your budget and requirements, you're probably better with a hatch. Nobody on here has mentioned that the 320D is a rear wheel drive car with a good amount of power and torque (relative to cars on Irish roads). This would be be a bit of a handful for your first car, particularly in winter.

Talking about NCB - I have 15 years NCB (obviously only 6 apply) since I started building it it up in 2004.

    My renewal (today) is €738 on a 2013 F30 330d

I wouldnt recommend the 320d for the OP myself but I taught my girlfriend to drive last year in a 530d and she was fine, except for parking it due to the size but hes not a great parker now either in her golf.

Lexus IS200h? Auto, hybrid reliability, should be nice enough interior etc. Handy for getting through the city center.

I wouldn't be buying a big diesel for your first car especially as you're not doing the mileage.

OP, I would advise against buying a diesel given your commute. You'll spend a lot of time in traffic which does not suit a diesel. DPF issues will be on the cards.

How are the Golf 2010-2011 1.4 TSI?
Cheaper to insure than the A5/A4.

You must do decent miles to have a diesel???

Does a used 150K-ish Miles used 2012 BMW F30 320D as a first car make sense (Budget 8-9K)?
Regardless of it being a first car, there is already a lack of sense in buying a 2012 F30 with 150k on it. It will be absolutely worthless in a year.

Explain that? How does it suddenly become worthless? Maybe the OP should just buy a 2011 for tiny money if that’s how it works

Allowing for 2k insurance stick your budget + 500 to 1k euros into done deal and tick petrol and see what's out there that takes your fancy. Diesel in the city doesn't make sense.

Looking for a Mk6 Golf 1.4 TSI (122 bhp) for now. Hoping to find a good deal around 6-7K with insurance under 2k.

What companies are giving you quotes on 230hp for your first car? That's near enough the prices you've been looking at on bog standard cars.

Wouldn't be touching a car with 200,000km though. Pricey tax too.

I'd be double checking with the insurance company that they are quoting you on the same model and not a less powerful one.

How are Audi A5 1.8 TFSI?
    Car price around 5000
    Insurance around 2200.

    Allianz quoting 2000.
    Still within budget.
Are A5s with the 1.8T petrol engines reliable?
