So yeah big navi......tried to pick up a 3090 but failed miserably same with 3080

Ordered a duel fuel range cooker instead, reckon they all hit the same temsp eventually :D

Probably the same size as well.

Not prepared to get on the press F5 bandwagon either, was always the sensible idea to wait and after 3080 launch day I decided best just to wait till more than 1 or 2 gpus have launched. In 6 months time there could be 5 or 6 times as many cards to pick from that will be a really nice upgrade fro where I am.

I feel a lot of people skiped the 20 series for the same reason I did and I can understand the eagerness but at the same time i just couldn't be arsed dedicating so much time to just getting a new card.

Wish I had the patience of you all. My problem is I'm on a 1060. So I am well overdue an upgrade. But the downward pressure on the market is also waiting for the 3080 stock!

Jay put it best I feel, the 3090 is the card that's aimed at the professional/semi professional/amateur 3D renderer who also wants to be able to play games.
The 3080 (as it currently stands) doesn't have enough VRAM to handle complicated scenes:

Currently planning to see what they're charging for the 3080 20GB, when it launches, as it's not too far behind the 3090, and will have that extra VRAM headroom.

I'm still on a 970, with it's 3.5 GB VRAM, and saying I think I'm better off not getting the new card with 10GB VRAM and holding off for one with 20GB feels kinda crazy... :D

He also said there's a second category this card is aimed at, namely people who can afford the best card the money can buy.

I ordered an MSI 3090 Gaming X Trio, and an RM850X to provide the juice. Because YOLO!

Yeah im on the 1060 (6GB Version) but my new monitor is on the way so my 1060 is goosed!

Realistically, its gonna be close to the end of the year if not early next year I get a 3080ti or 3080 super at this rate.

Might aswell leave the monitor in the box

Linus was saying the 3090 was spiking to 450w and they needed to replace thier PSU to a larger one.

Hard to find info, but the RMX850x is single rail 12v, so roughly 70amps of power delivery combined. It should be fine but you would usually aim for not being so close to the rated power.

The Trio is for my son, who has an i7-6700k (overclocked by PCSpecialist to 4.4GHz), and a 1440p 144Hz monitor.

I will wait for Intel to finally crack the PCI gen 4 then upgrade his system.

    A RTX3090 with a 6700k?

    Surely a 4th gen Ryzen (even a 3rd gen 3700X) + RTX3080 makes about 100% more sense.

I missed the boat with the 3080s, and buying a 3090 now makes me Super-Dad, (as opposed to a 3080 when it will be available).

As for Ryzen, no thanks. I'm more of a Blue Team kind of guy.

Putting aside that Intel v AMD thing, the 6700K is really dated and will bottleneck the crap out of a 3090 generally speaking.

Obviously at 1440p 144hz, the objective is 1440p, ultra quality, close to 144hz as possible.

Nothing wrong with the 6700K, still fairly OK even today, but definitely not for a 3090 build IMO.

The fact that the 3090 is barely faster than a 3080, and a 6700K would still bottleneck a 3080, means you're paying 3090 prices and getting probably 3070 levels of performance.

The only scenario where the 6700K would be viable with a 3090 would be 4K ultra 60hz.

    You're missing the point.
He is currently gaming on his 3 year old rig: 6700K, 1080Ti, 1440p GSync monitor. That's where we are.
Then he says "I want to try Ray Tracing". So I try to get a 30-series card. I failed to get a 3080, but managed to pre-order a 3090. Forget the bottleneck, the cost per frame, the efficiency, the other cards. The whole point is to get a 30-series card as soon as possible, and be "Super Dad".

There's Christmas coming, and then his birthday in February. Maybe a 4k monitor should be next, and then Intel's next gen is out and PCIe 4.0 SSDs from Samsung, and other goodies.

Eventually, it will all make sense.

I have almost the same spec.

    An overclocked 6700k, a 1440p 144Hz screen and a GTX 1070.

    1. At the moment the 1070 is my bottleneck in getting to 144Hz on the games I play so I'm planning/hoping to buy a 3080.

    2. Once I get the 3080 then the 6700k will become the rate limiting component in my system and I will update that in due course

    3. Then some other component will be rate limiting ... the 1440p for example.

The whole thing is circular and every system will always have a "weakest" or rate limiting component.

That thing in Switzerland will require paying VAT, even if they did ship it here.

I just don't get that train of thought, sticking to a brand name

bang for buck is where its at.

I for one will change brands at the drop of a hat with performance based on the best architecture, and to be fair AMD are way ahead of Intel at the moment

by what 5-10 fps? on their 14+++++++++ refresh on their beaten horse of a overpriced sku that runs over a bazillion watts nearing the temperature of the sun

we will see what happens with the Zen 3 launch

They are best for gaming still, just not for value/cores. You can't really justify saying AMD are way ahead. It's not like when AMD were on fx

We will see next month with Zen 3, I am no fanboy of either company but Intel have been flogging their 14nm for the last 10ish years

ryzen is on their 3rd gen and I firmly believe that they will take the gaming crown next month

I'd tend to agree they probably will take the gaming crown/trade blows with Intel but that doesn't make them miles ahead either
