VW Golf: belt and water pump

I was just wondering if anyone here could clarify something for me please, My partners car was losing coolant over a few weeks and a belt and water pump were changed on a VW golf mk6 about a month ago as the pump was a suspected slow leak. The belt was also fitted to match the water pump as they were purchased as a kit, and given the cars reg and model to get the correct parts.

That did not fix the leak as afterwards it just just leaked slower and took a month to notice a drop in coolant. It went to VW and they stated the wrong pump and belt were fitted.

Basically I was under the impression that once the keying/teeth matched everything they would correctly drive the alternator, the matching water pump, power steering and air conditioning. If the wrong belt and pump were fitted I thought it just simply wouldn't fit or slip and not drive anything else, so no air conditioning etc. would be working correctly or not at all.

Everything worked though, it just had a slower leak afterwards. Am I missing something?

It depends on the kit used. If ut was a spurious kit, i've seen some low quality water pumps leak virtually inmediately. You'd want to make sure a good quality kit was used like Gates or Continental.

Thanks, that would indicate to me a low quality kit would be a "defective" water pump kit fitted, not that they were the wrong parts fitted, as I cant see how an incorrect pump and belt could be fitted and be the wrong belt so it doesn't drive the power steering, AC and run the alternator etc. and yet still have those components working.

So basically I wasn't told a defective part, I was told the wrong parts were fitted

The timing belt runs the water pump.
The fan belt runs the alternater and air conditioning
