‘Flipside’ by Shane Burke is a funny and moving new play from Run Amok Theatre, directed by Andrew Deering. April 4th (preview)- April 9th. 8pm. €15/€12 concession. €10 each for groups of 8 or more. The Pearse Centre, 27 Pearse St.,Dublin 2.

Flipside is a fresh, funny and moving look at four lovers’ entangled and parallel lives from new playwright Shane Burke. A house-swop between friends brings Sicily to Dublin and Dublin to Sicily. Flipside places the audience in the unique position of watching two storylines unfold at the same time.

In Sicily, the sun is blazing and the lemoncella is flowing. Conan and Katie are keen to explore the land of Dionysius and Don Corleone. But soon they will be hanging out with mummies and nosey neighbours, while trying desperately to realise why they ever got together in the first place.

Meanwhile in Dublin, the summer skies are full of rain and Sinéad and Evan realise that the life they left behind is waiting for them. Sinéad’s old fiancé is on the scene, her parents think she’s a traitor and Evan is acting like a second generation yank in search of his roots.

Flipside is a bittersweet, contemporary play which shows that love and war are often inseparable.

The play is produced by Run Amok Theatre, a newly established group of actors, directors and writers with the aim of producing new and original writing. ‘Flipside’ is directed by Andrew Deering, who recently directed Jane Mulcahy’s A Date with Mercy and the cast of four are Erika McGann, Joe Jennings, Irene Byrne, Liam Halley.

Hi all.. just a quick request!
Im
organising a charity fashion event in Re-dress from 7-10 pm Friday 1st April, in aid of Our Ladys Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. This takes place in 2 levels, with the upstairs area as a room holding about 30-40 people in which Im holding the 'Evening Soiree'- hoping to reproduce a relaxed 19502 style club atmosphere with round tables, cards, mood lighting and a few performances. Just wondering if ye know of anybody who would be interested in donating 10 minutes or so of their time to perform a burlesque piece- dance, music or comedy. This would be for small acts/pieces only, and I would hugely appreciate it. Please see the below site for more information... I can also be contacted via it

'Othello' - by William Shakespeare

Presented by Bruiser Theatre Company.
Adapted by Patrick J. O’Reilly. Directed by Lisa May.

‘O! beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-ey'd monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on.’

Bruiser Theatre Company explodes onto the stage with an electrifying contemporary take on Shakespeare’s most brutal and gripping thriller-tragedy of love, paranoia, jealousy and murder. The Gonzo Theatre presents: the “charming alcoholic monster” monologue 'Rum and Vodka' by Irish Playwright Conor McPherson at the International Bar, 4-9 April 2011

Can the ultimate bender help us figure out what is truly important in life?
Spend an unsavoury sex and alcohol-fuelled weekend in the company of a young man on the skids. Aged 24, he married the girl who, after a late night drunken encounter at a party, had become pregnant. Now with two daughters, he has grown up too fast and is now intent on making up for lost time.

A young Irishman with a drink problem tells of three momentous days in his life when his drab nine-to-five existence is obliterated in an escapist binge which threatens to engulf him.

Rum and Vodka, a concoction said to have the "power to wake the dead," is an enthralling contemporary tale of an Everyman’s sudden fall from grace.

Best known for his work The Weir, McPherson was described by the New York Times as ".. quite possibly the finest playwright of his generation" .

This is a solo performance by Kieron Smith, who after a successful run at Gonzo Theatre, Cavan, is excited to bring the play to Dublin audiences: “it is an honour to work on McPherson’s debut monologue play and to bring it to the International Bar – significant as it is where McPherson’s early work was originally presented”.

****

“Smith mesmerised throughout..... [he] succeeded in revealing this despicable character’s insecurity, and arguably rendered him almost sympathetic, regardless of what level he stooped to. The degree of sympathy the audience had for him probably depended on how much free will they believe he had left.” – The Anglo Celt

“I think my overall ****edupness is my impatience... I went straight to the Flowing Tide on Abbey St, pint and a short, never drank so fast, I was glad of a drink, took the edge off my worries” – Narrator – Rum and Vodka

Venue: The International Bar (upstairs, Wicklow St, Dublin 2)
Date: 4th – 9th April 2011
Time: Matinee shows Wednesday 6th – Saturday 9th @ 1pm
Evening shows @6.30pm
Admission: €8 for lunchtime, €10/€8 conc. for evening show

VIDEO TEASER - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxUHWGHqFJs

For media passes or additional information contact 0863678501. Photographs available on request. This production of Rum and Vodka was first staged in The Gonzo Theatre, Cavan in 2010.

The play tells the story of Cass Maguire who returns home to Ireland after fifty years in the US and quickly finds herself an outsider. Hope some of you will be able to come along!

TooDog Theatre Company presents
2 One Act Plays

Bardot Bites
& Lucy Bastible

Directed by Mary Curtin
Written and Performed by Denise Quinn

Cork Arts Theatre
Saturday 16th April 2011 @ 8pm

Tickets €15/€12 concession

TooDog Theatre Co. are offering a wonderful evening's entertainment with two hilariously funny one-act plays. This production directed by Cork based Mary Curtin, is on a national tour and has met with considerable critical acclaim. It has been described as 'great fun, lively, fast moving, fearless.'

The first play in the double bill, Bardot Bites centres on 45 year old Bid who has led a sheltered life looking after her ailing mother. On her mother's death Bid is manipulated into the world of work by her older sister 'Francine The Beauty Queen' who epitomes the sister from hell and is a super b***ch of unparalleled proportions! In her new career on the Cheese Counter of the local Deli, Bid meets twenty-one year old cousins Leandra and Leonie, both man mad and experienced hands in the dating and relationship game. Under their none too gentle tutelage Bid makes her first tentative and fiercely funny forays into the world of men and romance and in the process succeeds in teaching Francine a long overdue lesson. As one critic said 'the audience loved Bid' and there is no doubt you will too!

If you were a woman of consequence, a doyenne of your social set, a snob from your fingertips to your toes, just how would you deal with a straying husband? In the second play, the darkly comic Lucy Bastible we enter the world and crumbling psyche of the privileged Lucy whose husband Jeremy succumbs to the youthful charms of the 'impudent, predatory, puerile' Patrice. Lucy,(described by one critic as 'larger than life and highly comedic') is not a woman to bear this betrayal lying down and she plots and executes a truly terrible vengeance on the errant Jeremy !

Ecstasy, Three Tales of a Chemical Romance is Irvine Welsh's most high profile work since Trainspotting. Released in the wave of publicity surrounding the film, it consists of three unconnected novellas. Adapted by Kevin Wyatt and directed by David McGowan, No Drama Theatre brings the third chapter, The Undefeated to the stage in the Teachers' Club, Parnell Square from the 17th to the 21st of May.

Resonant of many of Welsh's other works, the story is set in Edinburgh against the backdrop of the early 90's rave scene. It can be described as a sly, subtle romance between Heather, a young woman dissatisfied with the confines of her suburban life and Lloyd an aging club goer.

Edinburgh born Welsh is an acclaimed and often controversial contemporary novelist, best known for his novels Trainspotting and The Acid House. His work is often characterised by raw Scottish dialogue and a brutal depiction of the realities of Edinburgh life. To date, Welsh has published seven novels and three collections of short stories as well as writing and directing several screenplays. Shooting for a film version of Welsh's Ecstasy, Three Tales of a Chemical Romance has also begun and it is due for release later this year.

A trip down the consumerist rabbit hole in New York City. The peculiar politics of the Sarasota, FL dinner theatre world. A Cold War era confrontation in Belgium that had nothing to do with nukes. Actor turned comedian Ashley Strand (Granary's Spring Awakening) presents a night of storytelling the likes of which Cork has never seen. Taken separately, they are three great yarns that are, at turns, fascinating, hilarious, shocking, absurd, and touching. Together they constitute a profound rumination on the entertainer's path, the challenges and sacrifices it demands, and why some people choose it in the first place.

"The show feels like a warm night of anecdotes around the dinner table... it is a rewarding amount of fun, memorable for its natural humor, as well as for the casual charm of its more roughly stitched edges...." -- DC Theatre Scene

"Had I read someone else's account of Mr. Strand's hapless journey through a life on the stage I would wonder why he never gave up. Having seen his performance, I am grateful he never has." -- The Washington Post

"Strand's ability to wring the extraordinary out of the banal has a redemptive quality to it. Stories that are, on their surface, depressing laments become, under the frenzied scrutiny of Strand's neurotic over-analysis, life-affirming celebrations." -- Washington Weekender

Ashley Strand runs The Coco Club, Cork's newest stand-up venue, along with Conn O'Sullivan. He is actor in residence at The Camden Palace Hotel Arts Centre in Cork, and is the Winner of the 2009 Hong Kong Comedy Festival. Glorified Disasters runs 9th - 11th of June at Camden Palace Hotel. Doors at 8pm, show at 9pm. Show is approximately 90 min with one intermission. Tickets are 10 euro. Now on sale at Camden Palace Hotel. To reserve contact info@camdenpalace.org. or 021-455-2383. 2 euro from the sale of every full price ticket to Suas (http://www.suas.ie/), an educational development NGO.

'Sunday Morning Coming Down'

Written and Directed by Mick Donnellan

Ballinrobe playwright Mick Donnellan brings his sell-out play to Cork Arts Theatre

2nd - 4th June @ 8pm

Tickets €15/€12 concession

A dark comedy that is both poignant and sad, the play takes you inside the home of the McGuire's, a family struggling to deal with the scourge of alcoholism and the social pressures that come with it. The play initially caught the eye of the Druid Theatre company in 2009 who commissioned a sell out public reading.

Having received a good reaction, and being afforded a chance to see the work brought to life, Donnellan took the decision late last year to bring it to the stage under his own production company - Truman Town Theatre. Casting took place in January and a hugely talented group of six has been assembled for the upcoming production.

Presenting us with razor sharp wit and a tight character-driven story, this show is a rollercoaster of comedy, tragedy, and the hilarity often associated with the darker side of a small Irish town. At times fiercely dark, and others astutely heartrending, this play offers enough ingredients to set the stage for a feast of drama and a heart breaking crescendo that will resonate with its audience for a very long time.

"It's been a while since there has been such palpable excitement about a new play...the buzz is well merited. This is powerful theatre...[Donnellan] wows us with a refreshing blast of riveting realism."

'I Love You You're Perfect Now Change' is a hilarious musical comedy which chronicles the stages of the modern dating game. Come on a journey with many hopeful romantics as they progress from painfully awkward first dates, to hellish encounters with the inlaws and entertainingly disastrous efforts to cope with parenthood.

"Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit"

'The Comedy Improvised Midsummer Murder Mystery'

Monday 13th to Saturday 25th June @ 8pm

Comedy is a murderous game!

The show that seems to be vying for the award of longest title of 2011 - 'The Comedy Improvised Midsummer Murder Mystery' - opens at the Cork Arts Theatre on Monday 13th June and runs until Saturday 25th June. It also promises to be one of the comedy highlights of the season bringing together some of Cork's finest comedy actors and a completely improvised, full-length murder mystery.

Imagine an Agatha Christie story combined with the zany antics of a Mel Brooks movie and the highly suspect characters from a Cluedo game and you have some idea of what to expect from this show. With no script to fall back on the actors must improvise the entire plot and its many twists and turns. All they really know for certain is that one of them will be a victim and one of them will be the murderer - but they have no idea who!

And that is where the audience plays its part, as it always must in improvisation. The audience will decide who the victim will be and who will have done the despicable deed. They also get to decide the murder weapon. And, just to keep the actors completely on their toes, the audience will also provide what may turn out to be hilarious secrets for each character which will be revealed at random moments throughout.

All the usual suspects will be there - the unpredictable Lord of the Manor, the secretive Reverend, the crazy Professor, the mysterious Countess, the inept Maid and, of course, the riddle-solving Detective. Or are they really what they seem? Bringing these characters to life each evening is the task for some very talented Cork actors including Laura Daly, Laura Harte, David O'Riordan, Richard Clare, Dominic McHale and Adrian Scanlan. Their experience in comedy improv will ensure that the audience won't have time to catch their breath. Their excellence at what they do also brought them to the attention of RTE as both Laura Daly and Laura Harte recently appeared on 'Republic of Telly'.

'The Comedy Improvised Midsummer Murder Mystery' is devised by theatre director, James Horgan, who says of the show, "It is the perfect antidote to all of the economic doom and gloom we hear these days. Each evening the audience gets to join in the fun and lose themselves in the side-splitting hilarity. And they do say that laughter is the best medicine, so come along to the Cork Arts Theatre and get healthy while you have a good time!!"

James went on to say, "Every performance of this show will be different because of the audience's involvement. People could come night after night and see a completely new story each time. That is the magic and the attraction of improvisation."

So, with audience suggestions, random musical cues and no script in sight 'The Comedy Improvised Midsummer Murder Mystery' is set to be a deliciously chaotic and hilarious evening's entertainment. Book early to avoid disappointment by calling the Cork Arts Theatre on 021 4505624. Further details on their website: www.corkartstheatre.com
