Hi I have just found this thread and I have to say fantastic work by all. I love looking at the pics and getting ideas, it's great to meet other like minded people.
Am going to try to attach a pic of my first attempt at icing a cake for my daughter 3rd birthday - was quite chuffed - not bad for a beginner - will have to figure out how to reduce the size of MB in the photo first

Well figured it out I think - here goes ....

Love the rainbow cake, but isn't hubby a bit young to be a hubby lol was the rainbow cake hard to make? Does the colouring effect the flavour it does look yum.

It was his birthday yesterday, so he's really 32. Wasn't hard to make at all, just took a bit of time. Colour didn't effect flavour at all, I used Vanilla bean paste and coloured paste though, I'd say liquid food colouring would make a difference

..well it's a cake of sorts a cheesecake inspired and slightly changed from a Jaime Oliver recipe.

Base is ginger nut biccys with crushed roasted hazelnuts.
Next layer is lemon curd (I cheated but you can always make your own or buy a good quality one).
Strawberries next (Jaime used raspberries which prob would of been nicer but hard to get nice fresh ones atm).
Then I topped it with Mascapone cream with a dash of milk and spoon of icing sugar mixed in but I also added a tablespoon of Baileys Biscotti flavour, then grated choc on top.

If you haven't tried Baileys Biscotti yet do! It's so delish! Although I guess Baileys Hazelnut would be nice to go with the hazelnut base. Ginger and lemon are such a nummy combo and it really did taste like a really good quality proper cheesecake, even nicer with Mascarpone than with cream cheese (don't like cream cheese myself).

A few more bits I've done lately. Starting to get the knack of this whole icing lark. Next step will be attempting to ice a cake with fondant when I get a chance.

Some more flowers. This is my student's work. We spent Sunday making this spray. She was delighted with the result. And I am very proud of her.

Cupcakes in the deep Ikea tin. Really loving it, something about the shape makes them taste better :p

    408050_10150651118075801_507880800_11531428_27027863_n.jpg

Crap picture and filter, but these were cupcake sized bakewells - pastry bottom, raspberry jam and topped with madeira.

And finally, not my creation! Got these at the Electric Picnic launch, they were divine! They were lemon or red velvet cake inside.

Those cake pops are so cute! I don't have any luck in baking cupcakes unless I use my shallow grey coloured tin with Dr Oetker plain white bun cases, anytime I try and bake cupcakes in another tin or with other paper cases they just turn out mush..dunno why.

    Hmm that is strange!

I have those ikea cupcake cases too, don't have the tin though, I manage to make them fit into my normal muffin tin! They sometimes end up a bit lobsided like this, but with a bit of fiddling they can look grand.

    424774_2591285111232_1527754729_31780120_1709586358_n.jpg

I had a bit of a disaster yesterday. I was experimenting with peppermint and pecan brownies, but took them out of the oven way too early and didn't realise until I had cooled and cooked them. Then I decided to put them back in the oven on a normal baking tray, and they kind of melted a bit. Ended up looking like this

    545156_2833488966177_1527754729_31871335_80019942_n.jpg

They tasted pretty good. I think I'm going to tweak the recipe a bit more, use a darker chocolate, no nuts and just the mint to make them like after 8 brownies.

I've two weeks off college and not a huge amount of work at the moment so I'm going to try playing around with stuff. Considering my first attempt at covering a cake with fondant. Anyone have any tips on doing it? Or any must have tools that I should get to start me off? I'm not looking to do anything fancy at the moment, just want to give it a shot.

I wish they had more patterns! No one else seems to be making the conical shaped cases for the tin. I don't think a regular one would be tall enough for the tin if I smushed one in.

Pidgwigeon buy a smoother anyway for definite, and make sure you have a good rolling pin for the sugarpaste. Watch some youtube tutorials on how to do it, that's how I learned, watched one and off I went. Don't roll it too thin.
