If I sit in my chair ,legs apart ,feet on the ground and gently using my folded arms push the legs further open but resisting this movement with the muscles at the top of the legs.....

    what muscles are being worked?

    Adductors.

5 muscles that run along the thigh interior.

Thanks . Are there any reasons to to work on those muscles?

Would they be any use for preventing a hernia in the groin area?

Might it be dangerous to "try this at home"?

No, not dangerous, though the exercise you describe doing will yield relatively little benefit.

And yes, when you do regular hip carriage exercises, you hit the adductors pretty hard by default.

If you're talking hernia in the groin region, it means hip carriage exercises - which are typically pelvic floor related (one muscle will often be an antagonist of the other thus they work in synergy).

So - you're not going to work them in isolation, but with your primary hip/ass/pelvic-floor exercises which are

    1) deadlifts
    2) reverse/romanian deadlifts
    3) squats (whatever variety you prefer)
    4) leg press

...you're going give your adductors a good work out as part of them anyways, and they're the best exercises for hitting the adductors.
