I've tried doing squats in the gym a few times but I get a really bad pain in my lower back as I go down. It's because I curve my spine to try and stay upright or balanced as I go down but I can't seem to find a way to do it without experiencing pain and bending my back. Anyone had the same problem? There was no weight on the bar when I did them btw.

Try using something to elevate your heels. (a plank/board of wood is good)
