    Hi,
    Hope someone can help.
I have just been offered my first council house. I have been on the list for 15 years. Obviously i am thrilled to finally have a forever home. I will have no furntiure or flooring, its a new build house. I know you can apply for an exceptional needs payment to help. Will i be considered for this as i have savings. My savings are from the last 3 carers support grant. I am a single parent to 2 special needs kids. I have saved the carers grant as we desperatley need a reliable car, i have alot of therapy appointments for my kids which are a 75 mile round trip and the bus just doesnt work for us. The only other income i have is one parent family. Would my carers savings be means tested. Its not alot, i have saved just under 3000e just enough for a car and insurance. I cant apply for a car loan as im not working and my only hope was to save my carers money. Im concerned now i will need to use this to put flooring and furniture into the council house and ill be another 3 years saving for a car which we desperately need.

You could open up special needs bank accounts in your children’s names and transfer the grant money into them. BOI have a vulnerable customer unit that do this.

Of course I’m not sure if you will be means tested in first place. It’s seems unfair if you would be. You need the car.
