Just watched part one of ‘Hits, Hype And Hustle’ - excellent :)

Especially the part about Blur almost being dropped whilst making ‘Modern Life Is Rubbish’ because the record company didn’t sense a hit.

Good to see Menswear on BBC Four too :D

Half way through it ... better than I expected ... although I have to object to a line I just heard the narrator say "The Zombies are mentioned in the same breath as the Beatles today ..."

Eh? Is DickDave Clark involved in this? More revisionist Beatle Bashing tripe! All credit to the Zombies but they were no Beatles.

As an aside, I turned on Radio Nova last night in the car and they played two Paul McCartney songs in a row which gave me a sinking feeling until I flicked through the stations and no-one else was playing him! Paul lives!

    And another... :(

RIP Mark E. Smith of The Fall

Outsider to the end. Marc Riley (being an ex-member, of course) understandably upset on 6Music right now.

Ah no, sad to him gone. There was no-one quite like Mark E. There isn't a whole lot new this weekend apart from a Sky Arts Sting Documentary which might have been originally made in French, from what I can see. Monsieur Le Sting must be big over there.

Elsewhere Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, U2, The Kinks,The Doors and eh ... Lisa McHugh all feature along with that BBC Insiders documentary with the very long name ...

And that's about it, The Blues Brothers moves from ITV3 to ITV4 this week (Friday 11pm), which is nice timing if you want to escape the Late Late Show before it gets to the extra miserable bit.

Shame about Mark E Smith, though - they let him read out the Football Results on Grandstand once. Which was only fair seeing as he wrote the music intro for that bit

‘’Look Abbott, we warned you...you’re barred from this nightclub. Learn to breakdance, and we might let you in!’’

He looks terrified in that video, I would question if he really does love a party with a happy atmosphere when it involves a jam packed nightclub.

I love the story that the Fall’s contract to appear on ‘Later…with Jools Holland’ included a clause stipulating that under no circumstances was Jools to play “boogie-woogie piano anywhere near the Fall.”

    :D

It’s as if the record company had made the video for A Flock Of Seagulls, but changed their minds at the last minute and simply added footage of Billy Ocean. :O

Maybe there was confusion at the beach and they ended up with the Tears For Fears video by mistake

When I think of Billy Ocean, ‘futuristic’ Mos-Eisley Cantina shoot-out does not immediately spring to mind.

    True fact:

Elaine and Barbara never met during the recording of the song.

No room in the studio for those shoulder pads, no doubt. :D

Good to see Killing Joke in the charts :D

My favourite KJ song (the riff sounds familiar, but I can’t think where from...oh well, whatever, nevermind ;) )...

Now, THAT is just pure class! Great post Skid (as per usual). Kirsty's voice.....she was born to sing that song..... It would have been interesting to see what would happened if they had worked more together, maybe done an album or something. Unfortunately, I guess we'll never know.... :(

Just had a listen to that. First time in ages. Her voice would rise the hackles on the back of your neck.

Here's another favourite of mine. Guess the backing band.

Great tune. Sometimes, you forget just how good she was and what an amazing voice she had....but then you hear one of her songs and you remember in two seconds....

The backing band? Well, I'll give some people a clue, it's the same backing band that she did a few tracks with around the same time - including this one:

    On Mark E Smith.
A friend of mine knew him well. Outside of the music business. Last September Mark asked him to an album launch in some small low key venue. After the show Mark gave my mate two t shirts. He sent me over one in return for a favour I'd done him. I've only worn it once.
