    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 24 to 30 June, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 4 degrees above normal. Highs will sometimes reach the mid to high 20s.

-- Rainfall will generally be a little below normal except for isolated parts of the southwest where near to above normal likely.

-- Sunshine will average near or slightly above normal, except near south coast where it may be overcast from sea fog.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy at first, then some sunny breaks will develop. A new round of showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop with amounts of 10 to 20 mm in some parts of Munster, likely less than 5 mm in most other places. Warm and humid, highs 19 to 22 C except closer to 15 C near south coast and 17 C near east coast.

TONIGHT will be misty and quite mild with lows 9 to 12 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers or thunderstorms, most likely in west Munster, north Leinster and east Ulster. Some places will remain dry, others could have as much as 10-15 mm rain. Highs will be in the range of 18 to 23 C.

WEDNESDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals and warm, although cooled near east coast and south coast by locally moderate sea breezes with sea fog or low cloud making some progress inland. Isolated thunderstorms may develop in the southwest. Lows near 12 C and highs in the range of 20 to 26 C although possibly a bit lower near east coast.

THURSDAY will be sunny and very warm with isolated thunderstorms possible. Lows near 14 C and highs near 27 C inland, possibly a bit higher in west central counties, 20 to 24 C closer to the coasts.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy, warm and humid with showers and thunderstorms developing, lows near 16 C and highs near 24 C. Some of these storms could become heavy.

OUTLOOK ... The weekend of 29-30 June is likely to see somewhat cooler temperatures in partly cloudy, breezy weather with a few isolated showers, highs 18 to 21 C. The following week should remain rather dry for a few days before a more unsettled period begins around the end of that week (5-7 July). Highs during this dry spell will be in the low 20s.

My local weather on Sunday was overcast with showers, sometimes rather heavy, and very cool for late June, highs only about 13 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 25 June to 1 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 3 to 4 degrees above normal. Highs will sometimes reach the mid to high 20s. It will begin to turn cooler by this coming weekend.

-- Rainfall will generally be close to normal but for most, the rain will be mainly on Friday into Saturday.

-- Sunshine will average near or slightly above normal, except near south coast where it may be overcast from sea fog.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers or thunderstorms, most likely in west Munster, north Leinster and east Ulster. Some places will remain dry, others could have as much as 10-15 mm rain. Highs will be in the range of 18 to 23 C. The cooler readings will be near the east coast as winds pick up from an easterly direction today, 30 to 50 km/hr at times.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with fog and mist patches developing, rather muggy and warm with lows 10 to 15 C.

WEDNESDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals and warm, although cooled near east coast and south coast by locally moderate sea breezes with sea fog or low cloud making some progress inland. Isolated thunderstorms may develop in the southwest. Highs will be in the range of 20 to 26 C although possibly a bit lower near east coast due to local sea breezes.

THURSDAY will be sunny and very warm (hot in some central and western counties) with isolated thunderstorms possible. Lows near 14 C and highs near 27 C inland, possibly a bit higher in west central counties where an isolated 30 degree reading is possible, 18 to 24 C closer to the coasts. Although there may be patchy sea fog and cooling sea breezes, the air mass will be warm enough that most coastal areas and beaches might be comfortably warm although cooler than inland (perhaps 18 to 21 C). Any thunderstorms would most likely occur near the west coast but a few miles inland where weak sea breezes converge with the heated air over land.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy, warm and humid with showers and thunderstorms developing, lows near 16 C and highs near 24 C. Some of these storms could become heavy in parts of the west, midlands and north. The showers and thunderstorms will make rather slow progress east overnight into Saturday morning.

SATURDAY will continue unsettled in the east with further heavy downpours possible, some rainfall totals of 20 to 40 mm may occur leading to spot flooding. The west will be fresher and clearing during the morning, with a few residual showers developing later in westerly breezes. Lows 12 to 16 C and highs 18 to 21 C, moderate westerly winds.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and cooler with highs near 18 C.

OUTLOOK ... The first week of July looks fairly pleasant with some sunshine each day, showers mainly brief and isolated and temperatures near normal, highs 18 to 21 C. A more unsettled period will set in towards the following weekend (6-7 July).

My local weather on Monday was cloudy and quite cool with a few showers, some brief sunny breaks, and highs around 16 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 26 June to 2 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 3 to 4 deg above normal, trending from even higher values around Thursday-Friday to near normal by early July.

-- Rainfall may average near normal in most places with thundery showers likely around Friday to the weekend.

-- Sunshine will also average near normal, although cloudy intervals will be rather frequent too.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will feature some hazy and warm sunshine mingled with cloudy intervals, isolated showers most likely in the inland southwest, and rather high humidity. Highs will reach 23 or 24 C but it may feel oppressively warm. The east coast, however, could be cooled to around 17 or 18 C by onshore breezes with drifting layers of sea fog or low cloud possible there.

TONIGHT will have clear but hazy intervals with lows only falling to 13 to 16 C, making it quite a muggy night.

THURSDAY will have intervals of very warm hazy sunshine, in fact it could be termed hot in some parts of the inland west and central counties where highs could reach 29 or even 30 C. Other areas will be well into the mid 20s with the exception of some coastal areas having onshore winds and sea breezes, 18 to 23 C there. Isolated thunderstorms are likely to pop up in a few places most likely just inland from south and west coasts due to sea breezes interacting with the warmer air inland. Thursday night will be very warm and muggy with lows only falling to about 16 to 18 C.

FRIDAY will continue very warm in parts of the east and southeast, with some sunshine despite increasing cloud, highs 22 to 27 C. However, cloud and showers will begin to dominate in the west as a cold front gets started moving east slowly, with the risk of heavier downpours and thunderstorms, highs closer to 23 C there.

SATURDAY will see another round of frontal showers and thunderstorms this time becoming heavy in the east-central counties by mid-day and afternoon. Highs will be in the range of 20 to 25 C after morning lows near 14 C.

SUNDAY will become considerably cooler with scattered showers developing, moderate westerly breezes and highs near 18 C.

MONDAY will be overcast in the north, partly cloudy in the south, and some heavy showers may develop in northern regions with highs generally around 19 C.

OUTLOOK for mid-week 2 to 4 July is for sunny intervals each day and highs in the 21 to 24 C range. After that, it may become a bit more unsettled and slightly cooler.

My local weather on Tuesday was partly cloudy to overcast with a few brief showers late in the afternoon, but improved temperatures reaching about 20 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 27 June to 3 July 2019

-- Temperatures will average 3 degrees above normal, even higher at first then closer to normal values later.

-- Rainfall will be between 50% and 80% of normal for most, although some heavy showers are possible in a few places.

-- Sunshine will be at least normal and could exceed that by 25% in some cases, the trend being towards more sunshine next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be oppressively warm and humid in parts of Munster, Connacht, south and inland west Ulster, and adjacent parts of Leinster. Highs will reach 27 to 30 C with some sunshine getting through rather extensive cloud cover at times. There is a risk of localized heavy showers or thunderstorms in isolated areas of Kerry, southwest Cork, and also from north Mayo to Donegal. Further east, although it will likely be warmer than yesterday, the marine influence will still be felt to some extent and highs will vary from 18 C along the east coast to about 23 C well inland in Leinster and east Ulster. The compensation may be that sunshine will become frequent by mid-day and afternoon after a somewhat cloudy start in some places. Moderate east-southeast breezes will continue to blow in from the Irish Sea, turning more to a southeast wind further inland.

TONIGHT will remain very warm and muggy, outside of a few areas cooled by sea breezes, and lows may be slow to fall to predicted values of about 15 to 18 C eventually, so the late evening could still be as warm as 20 degrees.

FRIDAY will start out sunny in some parts of the east and with winds now more southerly, the marine influence will be ended and replaced by the very warm temperatures further west today. Those areas will have another warm day but with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers developing, with risk of an isolated thunderstorm. Highs in most places will be 24 to 28 C, somewhat lower near the south coast and in the northwest where 20 C will be typical.

SATURDAY will see another round of showers and thunderstorms developing as the first front washes out over the Irish Sea to be replaced by a somewhat stronger one bringing the warm spell to a more definite conclusion. Highs will be around 24 C after another quite warm night with lows 14 to 17 C.

SUNDAY will be considerably cooler and fresher with westerly breezes of 40 to 60 km/hr, partly cloudy skies and scattered although generally brief showers. Lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.

MONDAY will also be relatively cool and somewhat unsettled with the greatest risk of showers in Ulster. Lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

NEXT WEEK is looking quite pleasant with high pressure in control after Monday, a generally dry spell with lots of sunshine and low humidity, temperatures warm enough in the daytime but not oppressively warm, 19 to 23 C. Nights will be a little cooler than in this current spell with the average low being about 8 to 10 C. That trend may only fade out gradually if at all by the looks of latest guidance which is beginning to suggest a rather warm and dry July may be in the works, perhaps with one or two brief interruptions of cooler northerly incursions.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny with afternoon cloudy intervals, dry all day for a change, and a bit warmer too, around 22 C.

    Friday, 28 June, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 28 June to 4 July 2019

-- Temperatures will average 3 degrees above normal, even higher at first then closer to normal values later.

-- Rainfall will be between 50% and 80% of normal for most, although some heavy showers are possible in a few places.

-- Sunshine will be at least normal and could exceed that by 25% in some cases, the trend being towards more sunshine next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out sunny in some parts of the east and with winds slowly becoming more southerly, the marine influence will be reduced and finally overcome with very warm temperatures spreading east through Leinster. Further west, expect another warm day but with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers developing, with risk of an isolated thunderstorm. Watch for updates as one or two areas could see locally heavy storms, but the guidance is quite scattered at the moment as to details. Highs in most places will be 24 to 28 C, somewhat lower near the south coast and in the northwest where 20 C will be typical.

TONIGHT will see a few heavy showers becoming more confined to the east then ending, otherwise partly cloudy skies and continued very warm with lows only falling to about 14 to 17 C.

SATURDAY will see another round of showers and thunderstorms developing as the first front washes out over the Irish Sea to be replaced by a somewhat stronger set of showers and thunderstorms, bringing the warm spell to a more definite conclusion. Highs will be around 24 C after another quite warm night with lows 14 to 17 C. There will be a clearing trend in the west during the afternoon and evening but the full effect of the cooler air moving in will not be felt until early Sunday.

It will turn considerably cooler (near 15 C) by the weekend of 6th-7th July but that may not last too long before another reasonably warm spell sets in.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with spells of very heavy rain, and a few rumbles of thunder. It was only about 13 C when raining but in brighter spells between showers it got up to about 19 C.

    Saturday, 29 June, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for week of 29 June to 5 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 2-3 deg above normal.

-- Rainfall will vary from below average in many western counties to above normal in the southeast (much of that today).

-- Sunshine will average near normal to somewhat above normal.

    FORECASTS AND ALERT

ALERT issued for locally severe thunderstorms in south and central Leinster and Waterford this morning, locally heavy rainfalls may cause flash flooding, intense lightning could produce power disruptions, and small to moderate sized hail is likely in stronger cells. Severe wind gusts are considered less likely although moderate wind gusts are probable on western to trailing southern edges of these cells as they move north this morning.

TODAY will continue warm and humid with outbreaks of heavy thunderstorms in the southeast. Some sunshine at first in south central counties, rather cloudy further north and west. Later on, the eastern storms will die out but a new round of showers and thunderstorms is likely to develop around Connacht and west Ulster, and these will spread further east. Highs 22 to 25 C for most, somewhat cooler near west and north coasts.

TONIGHT will see a few more showers and thunderstorms then a gradual clearance towards morning, somewhat fresher with lows 12 to 14 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with passing showers in moderate westerly winds. A few showers could become heavy with hail and thunder in northern counties by afternoon. More chance of a dry day near south coast and possibly parts of Leinster. Fresher with highs 16 to 19 C.

MONDAY will continue partly cloudy and cooler with occasional showers, mostly in the north, lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will be very fine days with plenty of sunshine, light winds, and low humidity. Highs near 22 C and possibly a bit higher inland. Isolated showers cannot be ruled out but will only affect a few locations in west Munster.

THURSDAY will see considerable cloud and gusty northwest winds developing, passing showers Connacht and Leinster, to intervals of rain in Ulster, but possibly remaining mostly dry in Munster. Highs near 19 C south, 15 C north.

OUTLOOK calls for another dry and settled interval to follow including the weekend of 6-7 July, then a cooler and unsettled week from about the 8th to 12th of July. Temperatures in that spell will be close to July averages.

My local weather on Friday was partly cloudy, not much local shower activity but heavy rain was falling a few miles to our southeast by evening. That moved up the Columbia River valley to our east and missed us by a few miles. Highs for the day were about 18 C. In contrast to last summer, we have a very low fire hazard locally, ranging to moderate on the west coast which has been somewhat drier.

-- Rainfall will average about 25 to 50% of normal.

-- Sunshine will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal (once we get past a cloudy start today).

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals developing, and outbreaks of light, drizzly rain becoming more showery later with the risk of an isolated heavier shower with thunder. Cooler than recent days with highs 15 to 18 C. Winds westerly 40 to 60 km/hr.

TONIGHT will become partly cloudy with just isolated brief showers dying out, lows 7 to 10 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with more frequent sunny breaks in the south, occasional showers in Ulster and some parts of north Connacht and Leinster. Highs 17 to 20 C. Moderate west to northwest breezes.

TUESDAY will be mostly sunny with light breezes and some patchy cloud in parts of Munster by afternoon, very isolated showers over higher terrain there, but for most a dry day with low humidity, morning lows 5 to 8 C and afternoon highs 19 to 23 C.

WEDNESDAY will continue mostly sunny with low humidity and light winds, lows 5 to 8 C and afternoon highs 19 to 23 C.

THURSDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, isolated showers more probable in the north and lows near 8 C, highs near 24 C.

FRIDAY will continue sunny with cloudy intervals, isolated showers and lows near 10 C, highs near 24 C.

OUTLOOK ... The fine spell will continue with a slow increase in cloud cover from west to east through the weekend of 6-7 July, temperatures continuing in the low 20s by day, then the following week will be somewhat more unsettled with near normal temperatures of 17 to 21 C.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy but dry despite frequent intervals of dark clouds, this time they seemed to be holding on to their moisture, and it was somewhat warmer than recent days with a high near 23 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 1 to 7 July, 2019

-- temperatures will average near normal to 1.5 deg above normal (midlands and inland south more likely to be above normal).

-- rainfall will average only 10 to 30 per cent of normal, after today it could be a prolonged dry spell for some southern and western counties.

-- sunshine will average near normal to 25% above normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with sunny intervals, becoming more frequently sunny by afternoon and evening. A few passing showers at first may bring 3-5 mm rainfalls in the north and trace to 2 mm in the south. Moderate northwest winds will start to die out by mid-afternoon. Highs will reach 17 to 20 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to clear with lows 5 to 8 C in rural areas, 10 C in some urban areas and near west, north coasts where some cloud may linger.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will be similar days, mostly sunny but with a few areas of cloud more likely near north coast and in parts of west Munster. Dry with low humidity. Highs each day 19 to 23 C, lows 4 to 8 C inland and 7 to 11 C near coasts and larger cities.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy and a bit warmer with highs near 24 C inland, 20 C near some coasts, with light and variable winds allowing sea breezes on most coasts.

FRIDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, highs 19 to 24 C.

OUTLOOK calls for the dry spell to continue in many areas, with slight interruptions in east Ulster and north Leinster which will at times get into outer edges of cloud and showers in northerly flows over Britain, but most of Ireland will be closer to core of Atlantic high pressure and may remain dry and often clear. Temperatures will remain fairly close to normal.

My local weather on Sunday was mostly sunny and it was warmer than most days this past month with a high of 26 C. There are a few isolated thunderstorms over hills in the region overnight and we may see one of those during the daytime on Monday.

-- Rainfall will be slight until near the end of the interval when it will begin to approach 75% of normal values.
-- Sunshine will be somewhat below average with a cloudier trend developing.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will see some further sunshine dimmed by increasing high cloud, which will drift further south, but then it may thin out at times this afternoon to give a few more sunny intervals later. Light winds in general, highs 18 C north to 22 C south.

TONIGHT will become mostly cloudy with lows around 8 to 11 C.

    Saturday, 6 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 6 to 12 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal or in some parts of the south, about 1 deg above normal.

-- Rainfall will average about 50% of normal values.

-- Sunshine will average about 75% of normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy, except near the south coast where sunny intervals will be more frequent, at least this morning. Some outbreaks of light rain will continue to push further south from Connacht and the north midlands, but these will tend to become just scattered showers before dying off entirely. Highs about 23 C in some parts of the south, 18 to 21 C elsewhere.

TONIGHT will see the cloud beginning to fragment over parts of the north, allowing lows there to fall to about 7 C. Further south it will remain rather cloudy and lows will be 10 to 12 C.

SUNDAY will see a mixture of cloud and sunshine, with isolated showers possible but not very widespread. Highs 19 to 23 C.

MONDAY will be cloudy and humid with some brighter intervals and isolated showers, highs near 22 C.

TUESDAY will have more generous sunny intervals and highs around 23 C.

WEDNESDAY will become overcast with outbreaks of light rain, highs around 20 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy with sunny intervals, a few showers clearing by afternoon and highs near 19 C.

OUTLOOK for FRIDAY and next weekend looks relatively similar with mixture of cloud and sunshine, isolated showers, and temperatures near average for mid-July.

Somewhat warmer into the following week perhaps, with faint signs of a warm spell developing later in July.

My local weather on Friday started off showery then cleared up in the afternoon with a fair amount of high cloud and distant thunderstorm clouds on the northeast horizon, and it felt warmer and more humid than usual for here with a high near 24 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 7 to 13 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal. Milder nights will account for most of this surplus.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent of normal; some places may be almost dry in the southeast.
-- Sunshine will average about 75% of normal values, more like 3-4 hours a day than the normal 4-6. This will be rather variable with parts of the south doing a bit better perhaps.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy in the south and west, with breaks to partly cloudy skies by afternoon and evening. There will be a few remnant light showers at first but not much if any accumulation. The day will start out brighter in parts of Connacht and Leinster and will then become partly cloudy by afternoon. Rather warm and humid with highs 19 to 23 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast and mild, with lows near 12 C.

MONDAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals in the south, quite humid with outbreaks of light rain in north Connacht and Ulster. Highs will reach 18 to 22 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy and warm with haze or mist at times, lows near 12 C and highs near 23 C away from somewhat cooler Atlantic coasts.

WEDNESDAY will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of light rain, 2 to 5 mm possible in west and north. Highs will reach 21 C.

THURSDAY will continue rather warm and humid with isolated showers, highs near 22 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with highs near 21 C.

OUTLOOK ... Somewhat warmer weather will develop by about next weekend with highs possibly reaching the mid 20s in places. This warmer spell could last a while, as guidance showing a gradually unsettled trend may get postponed in stages.

My local weather on Saturday was pleasant, some sunshine with towering cumulus clouds here and there, and an active thunderstorm off to our east during the evening, but that moved north and missed our location by a few miles. The high was about 23 C. In contrast to last summer, this region has almost no fire hazard at present, and no smoke spoiling the air quality as we endured for many weeks last year.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 8 to 14 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1.5 to 2.5 deg above normal. Milder nights will account for most of this surplus.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent of normal; some places may be almost dry in the southeast.
-- Sunshine will average about 75% of normal values in north and west, to about normal values in east and south.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals in the south, quite humid with outbreaks of light rain in north Connacht and Ulster. Highs will reach 18 to 22 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few lingering showers in parts of the north, lows about 12 C.

This warmer spell seems likely to persist for most of the second half of July, with the occasional unsettled day but generally not much rainfall in total, especially in the south.

My local weather on Sunday was overcast with scattered showers around the area although it stayed dry at my location, radar was showing some heavier rain over local higher terrain. The high was about 18 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 9 to 15 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 3 deg above normal, highest in the midlands and inland south.
-- Rainfall will average about 75% of normal in parts of the north but only 25% in the south.
-- Sunshine will begin to improve later in the period after a cloudy start, the net result should be near average amounts of sunshine.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy in the north with showers, sometimes briefly heavy across parts of Ulster and adjacent north Connacht to north Leinster. Amounts of 10 to 15 mm are possible there, but further south it could remain dry in many parts of the country with just a chance of a brief shower, partly cloudy, warm and humid. Highs will range from 18 C in some northern areas to 23 C inland south.

TONIGHT will be overcast, muggy and rather warm with lows of 13 to 16 C. Some further rain is likely especially in Connacht.

WEDNESDAY will feature somewhat more widespread rain showers and overcast skies, with highs about 19 for most to perhaps 22 C inland southeast.

THURSDAY will bring partial clearing and sunshine later in the day, little change in temperatures, lows near 14 C and highs near 22 C.

FRIDAY and the WEEKEND are looking fairly settled and warm, with a mixture of cloud and sunshine. Any prolonged sunshine could warm inland and east coast areas up into the mid 20s, certainly 22-23 C looks easily achievable with even limited sunshine. It will be rather humid but only a slight chance of an isolated shower breaking out.

OUTLOOK for next week continues warm, generally dry with a few weak frontal passages allowing a slight chance of localized showers, highs may be in the 23 to 26 C range much of the time, and nights will be comfortably mild (12 C on average). The longer term guidance has been "low confidence" (at least I have low confidence in it) recently and sometimes it wants to bring more unsettled and cooler flows from more of a northerly source but then that tendency fades out at times, so there's no really strong reason to speculate on any marked changes from the recent run, once we get past this slight downturn mid-week (in the north in particular) it could be a fairly decent stretch of summer weather.

My local weather had some sunshine and towering cumulus clouds in all directions, some of which got a bit thundery, but only a trace of rain was noted at my location, probably some sharp downpours right underneath any of the buildups. It was rather warm with highs around 23 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 10 to 16 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will be 1.5 to 3.0 deg above normal, with the inland south and southeast most likely to have the higher departures.
-- Rainfall will be 50 to 75 per cent of normal with a few parts of east Ulster perhaps near to slightly above normal.
-- Sunshine will average about normal but could go higher than that in some eastern counties.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy, with the best chance of any brighter intervals in the southeast. There will be sporadic outbreaks of light rain this morning, then a somewhat heavier outbreak moving west to east mid-day to afternoon. This may become quite heavy in east Ulster and north Leinster by late afternoon but elsewhere it may only amount to 5-10 mm in total. Warm and humid with highs 18 to 22 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with partial clearing in the west and south towards morning, a few residual showers in the north, and quite mild with lows around 14 C.

THURSDAY will see a rather cloudy start leading to partly cloudy mid-day conditions and sunny skies for many places later in the afternoon and evening. There could be a few light showers in the earlier part of the day. Highs will be 19 to 23 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with lows near 12 C and highs 20 to 24 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with longer sunny intervals possible in the midlands, inland south and most of Leinster. The cloudier west and north could see a bit of coastal drizzle but also some brighter spells. It could become quite warm in any prolonged sunshine, highs will be at least 20 C and could reach 24 or 25 in sunshine.

SUNDAY will be another warm, settled day with a better chance of sunshine in more of the country, highs once again potentially could reach the mid 20s. (overnight lows both days on the weekend around 10 to 15 C but these readings only briefly around sunrise, the nights will be quite warm until well after midnight).

MONDAY there is some chance of cloud and scattered showers although I won't be too surprised if this frontal system is weak enough for the dry spell over the weekend to continue in some areas. Highs will likely be in the 19 to 23 C range.

OUTLOOK beyond that is not greatly different, temperatures continuing in the rather warm lower to mid 20s, occasional weak frontal systems bringing small amounts of rain at times, but some sunshine likely each day also.

My local weather on Tuesday was a welcome sunny day with nothing showing on the radar between the coast and the Rockies, probably the first day like that this summer across southern B.C., and it was quite warm, about 25 C "up here" and 30 C in the nearby Columbia valley where we were most of the day. (the elevation difference is 500 metres). It has clouded over since sunset and looks set to rain at times later.

The National Hurricane Center (US) is tracking a tropical system in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, moving west. This could soon become Tropical Depression number 2 (we had Andrea back in May, nothing formed in June) and possibly Tropical Storm Barry if it were to get that strong (one model shows it doing that by the weekend south of Louisiana but prolonged heavy rainfall seems to be the main risk with this system whatever status it attains).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 11 to 17 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will be 1.5 to 3.0 deg above normal, with the inland south and southeast most likely to have the higher departures.
-- Rainfall will be 75 to 100 per cent of normal (much of this towards end of the seven day interval so rather dry for 4-5 days now).
-- Sunshine will average about normal but could go higher than that in some eastern counties.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will have a rather cloudy start, some sun at times in north midlands towards Dublin, but generally leading to partly cloudy mid-day conditions and sunny skies for many places later in the afternoon and evening. There could be a few light showers in the early cloudier part of the day. Highs will be 19 to 23 C.

TONIGHT will become partly cloudy with widespread fog or mist patches in rural areas, lows 8 to 12 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with lows near 12 C and highs 20 to 24 C. Higher readings will be found in the inland southeast.

MONDAY will see early sunshine and increasing afternoon cloud leading to some outbreaks of light rain by evening, highs 21 to 25 C.

TUESDAY will bring more widespread showers and highs 19 to 21 C.

OUTLOOK beyond that is for alternating dry and showery intervals of about two days duration, all blending together to a rather warm late July with some potential for hotter temperatures to develop eventually, but with rain reaching more or less normal values in general, probably an ideal outlook for farmers and gardeners with good plant growth but not too dry.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with a few breaks, highs near 22 C. There were small amounts of rain in the early morning but the day itself remained dry.

The National Hurricane Center (US) continues to track a tropical system in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, moving west. This is very likely to become Tropical Depression number 2 later today (we had Andrea back in May, nothing formed in June) and possibly Tropical Storm Barry by Friday (it may peak at marginal cat-1 hurricane intensity before moving inland around Sunday near Lake Charles, LA.) Prolonged heavy rainfall seems to be the main risk with this system whatever status it attains and this has already set in around New Orleans.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 12 to 18 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will be 1.5 to 3.0 deg above normal, with the inland south and southeast most likely to have the higher departures.
-- Rainfall will be 60 to 90 per cent of normal (almost all of this from Tuesday onwards, so rather dry for 3-4 days now).
-- Sunshine will average about normal to 25% above normal in some eastern counties.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with highs 20 to 24 C. Higher readings will be found in the inland southeast. The cloudier north could see a few brief showers but amounts will be slight.

TONIGHT will become generally clear with widespread mist and low level fog in valleys forming after midnight and clearing away an hour or two after sunrise. Lows will range from 8 to 12 C.

SUNDAY will be another warm, settled day with a better chance of sunshine in more of the country, highs once again could reach the mid 20s to about 26 C after overnight lows around 10 to 15 C.

MONDAY will see early sunshine and increasing afternoon cloud leading to some outbreaks of light rain by evening, lows near 12 C and highs 21 to 25 C.

TUESDAY will bring more widespread showers with lows near 14 C and highs 19 to 22 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY also look rather unsettled with further showers likely, highs around 20 to 22 C.

OUTLOOK for FRIDAY 19th and WEEKEND of 20th-21st is generally fair and quite warm again, highs 20 to 25 C.

My local weather on Friday was rather cloudy but with brief sunny intervals, and it stayed dry reaching about 23 C.

Tropical Storm Barry has formed as expected south of Mobile Bay and is headed slowly towards a landfall south or southwest of Lafayette LA on Sunday most likely, at the moment the system's rainfall bands have weakened but they are expected to intensify again late today and on Saturday.

    Saturday, 13 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 13 to 19 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, cooling gradually after Monday.

-- Rainfall will average 60 to 90 per cent of normal values, most of this will occur from Tuesday onwards.

-- Sunshine will average between 75 and 100 per cent of normal values, or about 4 to 6 hours a day on average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out rather cloudy with sunshine gradually developing across parts of Munster this morning and spreading into some parts of Connacht and Leinster by early to mid afternoon. Ulster may remain rather cloudy, however. With light winds it may feel a bit muggy, and with any prolonged sunshine it could get as warm as 24 C in some parts of the inland south, but 20 C may be the top reading in cloudier locations.

TONIGHT will have some clear intervals and widespread mist leading to fog patches especially in valleys. Lows 8 to 12 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny from north to south, and quite warm especially inland from the east and north coasts which will have weak sea breezes cooling shoreline areas. Highs will range from about 19 C in some coastal locations to 25 C further inland and towards the west coast.

MONDAY will be another rather warm day with sunshine at first, some increase in cloud by afternoon, and scattered outbreaks of light rain by evening. Lows near 12 C and highs near 24 C.

TUESDAY will feature passing showers and slight risk of thunder, with lows near 15 C and highs near 22 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will be more unsettled with frequent showers, possibly adding up to 10 or even 15 mm of rain in some areas, and it will become rather breezy from the south to southwest at 30 to 50 km/hr. Lows near 15 C and highs near 19 or 20 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for some improvements briefly around Friday-Saturday then a return to these more unsettled conditions of midweek by Sunday. Highs will remain close to late July normal values of 19 to 22 C.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with brief glimpses of the sun, but it has cleared nicely this evening, giving a good view of Jupiter and the adjacent almost full Moon -- if you have a chance tonight, you'll find the moon very close to Jupiter in the sky, and Saturn off to their left (looking south to southeast around 11 p.m.).

Barry seems to be approaching hurricane intensity and will make a gradual landfall later today into Sunday morning; the main problem continues to be locally heavy rain and storm surge potential, the wind speeds should peak at cat-1 (roughly 80-130 km/hr).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 14 to 20 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, cooling gradually after Monday.

-- Rainfall will average 60 to 90 per cent of normal values, most of this will occur from Tuesday onwards.

-- Sunshine will average between 75 and 100 per cent of normal values, or about 4 to 6 hours a day on average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly to mostly sunny from north to south, and quite warm especially inland from the east and north coasts which will have weak sea breezes cooling shoreline areas. Highs will range from about 19 C in some coastal locations to 25 C further inland and towards the west coast. The east coast cooling will probably be restricted to first 2-5 kms inland south of Dublin but may extend further inland in Meath, but it should be a very fine day for most anyway. Cloud over parts of Ulster could take a few hours to disperse.

TONIGHT will be generally clear with occasional cloud in the southwest, lows 8 to 12 C.

WEDNESDAY will be more unsettled with frequent showers, possibly adding up to 10 or even 15 mm of rain in some areas, and it will become rather breezy from the south to southwest at 30 to 50 km/hr. Lows near 15 C and highs near 19 or 20 C.

THURSDAY will see a few more showers, less frequent than Wednesday's outbreak, and highs near 18 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for some improvements briefly around Friday-Saturday and now it looks like that could extend well into Sunday before a return to the more unsettled conditions of midweek by Sunday night and Monday. Highs will remain close to late July normal values of 19 to 22 C or possibly a few degrees higher in parts of the south and east.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy and warm with a high near 27 C. Barry has moved inland but rain continues to feed in from the Gulf of Mexico. The remnants will take several days to break up over the lower Mississippi valley.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 15 to 21 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 0.5 to 1.5 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average near normal values, perhaps a little heavier in south (if Friday system tracks as expected)
-- Sunshine will average a bit below normal after today in particular.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with increasing cloud by afternoon in western counties, followed by isolated showers there by late afternoon. Warm with highs 20 to 24 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with a few showers, 2 to 5 mm rainfall potential, lows 12 to 15 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with showers, highs near 23 C, and winds southwest 30 to 50 km/hr.

WEDNESDAY will be overcast with frequent showers, some heavy, and 10-15 mm rainfall potential. Lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy and cooler with a few showers and moderate westerly breezes, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast in the north with chance of showers, highs near 18 C, and overcast with outbreaks of rain across the south, highs near 16 C.

OUTLOOK for weekend of 20th-21st is for gradually clearing skies Saturday and some sunshine at times on Sunday, relatively warm again with highs back into the low 20s. The following week is now looking rather warm as well with highs possibly reaching mid 20s.

My local weather on Sunday was partly cloudy to overcast, a few rumbles of thunder mid-afternoon although the heavier storm went south along the international border, and it was about 21 C for a high.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for week of 16 to 22 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal, perhaps 1.0 above normal in some northern counties.
-- Rainfall will average near normal, to 25% above normal in the south.
-- Sunshine will average about 70 to 90 per cent of normal values, higher in the north central counties.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with showers, highs near 19 C north to 22 C south, and winds southwest 30 to 50 km/hr.

WEDNESDAY will be overcast with frequent showers, some heavy, and 10-15 mm rainfall potential. Lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C. Winds rather blustery at times, south to southwest 40 to 60 km/hr.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy and cooler with a few showers and moderate westerly breezes, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C. Showers may be more frequent in Ulster and north Connacht than further south.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast in the north with chance of showers, highs near 18 C, and overcast with outbreaks of rain across the south where as much as 20 mm could fall, highs near 16 C. Light east to northeast breezes in most regions.

OUTLOOK for weekend of 20th-21st is for gradually clearing skies Saturday and some sunshine at times on Sunday, relatively warm again with highs back into the low 20s for the south and east, 17-19 C in west and north. There may be a few showers skirting the north and northwest coastal counties at times. Moderate south to southwest winds could become gusty at times in Ulster and Connacht. The following week is now looking rather warm as well with highs possibly reaching mid 20s.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with a touch of mid-day drizzle but essentially dry conditions, rather humid and around 19 C.

Full moon occurs later today but in Ireland there may be too much cloud to see it very often or at all, but if you do get a break in the cloud cover, you'll see Saturn very close to the full moon and brighter Jupiter off to their right if you're looking south around 11 p.m. to midnight.

-- Sunshine will average 50 to 70 per cent of normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly to mostly cloudy with outbreaks of light rain sometimes heavier in Ulster, where another 5 mm may fall. It will be rather cool by recent standards with fresh westerly breezes 40 to 60 km/hr at times, highs 15 C north to 18 C south.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain returning after a brief dry interval, but heavier and more persistent in Munster. Fog and mist likely to develop, lows near 10 C.

FRIDAY will see outbreaks of moderate rain spreading north into the midlands and Leinster. Further north, showery light rain or drizzle at times with a few breaks. Generally light winds turning easterly. Rather warm and humid by afternoon, highs close to 20 C away from coasts where 16 to 18 C more likely.

MONDAY will be warm and humid with rain later in the day or overnight into Tuesday morning, rather heavy in west Munster and Connacht. Highs will be 21 to 24 C.

OUTLOOK for the rest of next week is rather unsettled at first with the frontal band of rain making slow eastward progress Tuesday and further rain sweeping north around mid-week, possibly thundery, as it will remain warm and humid. Somewhat fresher and drier towards the end of the week.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with showers and highs near 18 C. It has been very warm and humid in central and eastern regions and a severe heat wave is being predicted for the weekend in east coast U.S. cities with highs 35 to 38 C and humidex values near 45 C.

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal. Monday and Tuesday will be warmest.
-- Rainfall will average near normal to perhaps 50% above normal in some western counties.
-- Sunshine will average 75 to 100 per cent of normal, best in the southeast.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will feature some outbreaks of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms. The track of the first wave of heavy showers will run from west Munster northeast into the midlands and north Leinster by early afternoon, east Ulster by late afternoon. Some places will see 20 to 30 mm of rain from this and gusty southwest to west winds 50 to 80 km/hr will set in near the south coast (but are not likely to make much progress further inland). A second wave will track a bit further north through Connacht into south central Ulster later today and overnight. This one could bring 10 to 20 mm rainfalls. Away from the heavier rainfall areas, some light showers and partly to mostly cloudy skies, warm and humid in the south and east with highs near 21 C, somewhat cooler in Connacht and Ulster with highs about 17 C. Except for the windy south coast, a lot of places may have rather light and variable winds for much of the day.

TONIGHT will see the rain more concentrated in the east before drifting away towards Scotland and the Irish Sea. Some partial clearing will develop in the southwest and later in most of Connacht. Lows near 14 C. It will become rather breezy from west to east overnight, westerly 40 to 60 km/hr at times.

SATURDAY will become partly cloudy and breezy with winds northwest 40 to 60 km/hr. Showers will become isolated before ending completely for the latter part of the day and evening. Highs 17 to 21 C from north to south.

SUNDAY will be warmer and quite humid, with outbreaks of heavy rain possible in Connacht and Ulster by late morning. Winds will be rather strong at times near Atlantic coasts (50 to 70 km/hr) and moderate southerly elsewhere (30 to 50 km/hr). Highs will reach 23 C in some parts of the inland south, midlands and Leinster, aided by some hazy sunshine at times, but 18 C in areas closer to the cloud and rain.

MONDAY will continue very warm and humid with southerly winds, a chance of heavy showers or thunderstorms mainly in western counties, and highs 21 to 26 C.

TUESDAY will also be very warm and humid but with more widespread showers and thunderstorms developing, highs 20 to 24 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY look unsettled with a gradual drop in temperatures as fronts move west to east, with further outbreaks of heavy showers at times. Highs will fall back to about 20 C.

The further outlook calls for a reload of the warm, humid pattern for another go round by the following weekend (27th-28th).

My local weather on Thursday was partly cloudy in the morning and sunny by afternoon with brisk northwest winds at times, highs about 19 degrees. Severe heat is spreading east from the plains states where it was near 40 C in places.

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal. Monday and Tuesday will be warmest.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal. Wednesday and Thursday will be the wettest days.
-- Sunshine will average 75 to 100 per cent of normal, best in the southeast.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather warm and quite humid, with outbreaks of heavy rain possible in Connacht and Ulster by later this morning. Rain will continue there with brief breaks until late tonight. Less frequent outbreaks of rain will extend to other regions during the day. Amounts will range from about 15 mm in parts of the north and west, to 5 mm in the southeast. Winds will be rather strong at times near Atlantic coasts (50 to 70 km/hr) and moderate southerly elsewhere (30 to 50 km/hr). Highs will reach 23 C in some parts of the inland south, midlands and Leinster, aided by some brighter intervals, possibly even some hazy sunshine at times, but temperatures will be steady 16 to 18 C in areas receiving the steady rain. There may be a some intervals of thundery rain by afternoon and evening.

TONIGHT will be warm and humid, with the last of any rain in the north gradually ending, lows 15 to 18 C, winds south to southwest 40 to 60 km/hr.

MONDAY will continue very warm and humid with southerly winds, a slight chance of heavy showers or thunderstorms mainly in western counties, although this may stay just offshore or near outer headlands on the Atlantic coast, with highs 21 to 26 C.

TUESDAY will also be very warm and humid but with more widespread showers and thunderstorms developing in western counties late in the day, lows 15 to 18 C and highs 20 to 25 C. Moderate to strong southerly winds will continue especially near coasts.

WEDNESDAY will have some morning showers or thunderstorms, following by partial clearing, and sunny breaks by afternoon, with moderate south to southwest winds, lows 13 to 16 C and highs 19 to 23 C.

THURSDAY will bring spells of heavy rain and risk of thunderstorms, 20 to 40 mm rain could fall, with temperatures steady around 17 C.

FRIDAY will see the rain tapering off to showers followed by partly cloudy skies and fresher, less humid conditions, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

OUTLOOK for next weekend and the following few days calls for a gradual warming trend and it could return to the mid 20s briefly around the last two days of the month.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy with brief showers, rather cool with highs around 18 C. Severe heat and humidity hit the larger cities of the eastern U.S. and southern Ontario, highs were well into the 30s with very high humidex readings 40 to 45 C. There were a few heavy storms here and there in this hot air mass bringing some relief at least temporarily.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 22 to 28 July

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal, but the first three days will produce most of the warmth, it will be near normal after mid-week.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal, much of this will fall on Thursday.
-- Sunshine will average 60 to 80 per cent of normal values, possibly near normal in parts of the southeast, cloudier in Connacht and Ulster.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be very warm and humid with blustery south to southwest winds 50 to 80 km/hr near some coasts, 30 to 50 km/hr inland. Highs will reach 24 or 25 C away from south and west coasts which will have some persistent low cloud and perhaps drizzle, temperatures about 19 or 20 C.

TONIGHT will be muggy and partly cloudy with lows only falling to 17 C on average.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy, very warm and humid with highs 24 or 25 C, except closer to 20 C near south coast. Some showers may brush parts of the west coast and start to move further inland by evening.

WEDNESDAY will see some morning showers followed by sunny intervals, still quite warm with lows near 16 C and highs of about 22 or 23 C, winds not quite as blustery but moderate south to southwest at times. Rainfalls of about 5 mm likely.

THURSDAY will see frequent showers, some heavy with thunder possible, and 20-40 mm rainfalls, temperatures steady 17 to 19 C.

FRIDAY will bring gradual clearing with rain tapering to showers in the north during the morning, then isolated scattered showers later on in more of a westerly wind 40 to 60 km/hr, lows near 12 C and highs near 17 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and highs near 19 C.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will continue the trend of near normal temperatures and isolated showers.

My local weather was sunny start to finish with highs near 28 C. Severe heat and humidity (DC was 37 C, felt like 45 C, NYC and BOS about the same) continued in the eastern U.S. followed by widespread gusty thunderstorms, but a more organized area of heavy rainfall will move from current location in Missouri towards the Ohio valley and then the mid-Atlantic states in the next two days, bringing some flash flooding and ending the heat wave for the time being.
