I'm just wondering how common this is? Is it enviable? If so, how long (it his much is and abuse does it normally take? Did it affect the performance of the board much?

Yes it's very common especially on boards with a light glass job or softer foam. On a short board you will get them where your knee pushes the board under water from duck diving and where you feet / heals land when popping up. It's normal. You shouldn't get them as much on a long board as they often have a heavier glass job but you do get them.

Cheap imported boards will show them more and over time short boards loose their spring or pop and become less responsive.
