I have no idea where to start so I guess posting here is a good idea. I consider myself a fairly athletic individual having competed in many sports. But since starting college its all slowed down. I need a challenge.

Can anyone give me advice on ideal training and preparation and an idea of how to get myself into a race. I think 1-3 months of training and ill be ready to compete.

    cheers.

Firstly, you're not as fit as you think you are I'd bet :)

How far can you swim and in what time?
Whats the longest you have ridden recently?
How often do you run 10km or more?

going back a step even from Tunneys post
do you own (or have access to a bike)?
    can you swim?
what do you currently do (in any sport) per week?

First of all, you 'll get duathlons from March onwards next year (run bike run).
Triathlons start in May(swim bike run)
see here http://www.triathlonireland-server.com/Events/EventCalendar for this years competitions. Watch out for the sign up dates.

You need a wetsuit, goggles, a bike, helmet, and a top, shorts and decent pair of runners.

Decide on a distance (sprint, olympic, half ironman, ironman)

    Get Training.
You need to be able to swim, cycle and run about 1.5/2 times the distance you're aiming for comfortably..
Build up the running slowly - injury is usually the biggest impediment to newbies.

Make a training plan and stick to it.
