Why are people making a housing issue out of this?

Because it was raised as an example of the state of the rental market.
That was answering a direct question?!
.... My point is that, as a guy, if the roles are reversed it is just not an issue. Therefore, I'm trying to understand how this could be as big a deal as to warrant raising it in the Dail.

Many have said same including the OP.
Having to refuse someone sex? From the evidence I have seen, the guy made a proposal, got refused and that was the end of it.

If you don't see a problem, that's just dandy.

Sorry, some are kept in apartments.

I'm in no way saying that there isn't a high percentage of sex workers who are doing so under duress, but do you honestly think that some people don't just do it out of their own free will?

Jesus man! Using Aryan and the "r" word together in a sentence?! You'll have the usual suspects deplatforming you before long! :)

I still don't see how that was in any way answering a direct question.

Some people reversed the idea and asked would it be different. I suggested what if it were indeed a man but with a male landlord. Look, nothing to see here, don't worry about everything you don't get, we could be here a while.

Ah the happy hooker. I'm sure there are however I'd say that's a minority. Plus sure it may be of their own free will and volition however I'd say most come from bad backgrounds. Pornstars for example, it's rarely the nice upbringing with white picket fence.

Sorry absolutely my fault. I assumed when you said you were answering a direct question, that there was a direct question you were answering.

I didn't realise that by saying you were answering a direct question, what you actually meant was that you were putting forward ridiculous hypothetical "what if" scenarios and then bringing in "surprise sex" for some unknown reason.

    Cranberries...

Don't rolleyes me. By breaking that societal taboo and the lowest personal morality (on both sides of the transaction) being flaunted quite openly, a market has been created and prices are being established for the company of "a Dublin college girl." It then becomes natural for that to bleed through to normal society by making everyone either a potential product or consumer, even if they aren't participating or even have any knowledge of it.

You make it sound like prostitution for rent is common place and part of the selfie lifestyle. I was saying I think that's bollocks, but in a whimsical manner.

Because it's a direct result of the current state of the housing market. Did you seriously not make that connection by yourself?

ahh schrodingers sex worker, feminists insist women are sexually equal to men and should be allowed do whatever they want and expose themselves however they want and sell pictures on the internet or sell sex if they want and its mens fault theyre oppressed, yet at the same time theres no way a woman would volountarily do it and men oppressing them is the only reason they do these things and so men must be punished for consuming these images / services.

We don't know if that is the case though. It could be true that it's linked to the current accommodation shortage, but that hasn't been proven at all in this case.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,903 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

They don't have to. The woman refused.

That's true, that woman refused. But the point stands. The current state of housing has made survival sex prevalent. Including using sex as currency to pay for rent.

If you don't see that as an issue for government to address, then that's a very sad state indeed.

The UK government addresses this topic late last year. But it dealt with it by making rent sex illegal instead of trying to address their housing issue.

    It's Coppinger.

The same woman that has wanted to forcibly Nationalise private companies to solve employment relations issues and the same woman that presented womens underwear in the Dail to make some sort of statement on the legal system to Varadkar.

And they sex worker, what do they use their earnings on? Accommodation, food and drugs. Just because it's not the punter that provides the accommodation directly it's basically the same.

Yeah, sure. So a regulated market would be the solution.

Yeah, sure. So a regulated market would be the solution.

With the current, pretty recent, regulation, the Government has turned its back on potentially regulating the market and making it safer. And also turned its back on potential tax income as well.

You don't see that there are some kinds of prostitution that are grand (not for me but boney of my business) and so e kinds are coercive, some are out of desperation and in some cases there's survival sex. The latter three leave the seller vulnerable and ripe for exploitation.

Can you seriously say you don't see any difference between them? Or why the government would have more interest in some types, than others?

but you could say that working as a cleaner is a 'survival job' nobody would choose it if they had options.

I think human traficked people, drug addicts etc... working in the sex trade fall in to a vulnerable category alright , but if a woman is claiming that she was out of all other options except to trade her body for a room at the moment then she really wasn't thinking that hard.

That's true but Coppinger would hardly be the first to misrepresent something for political gain.

It might be the case here, as struggling tenants being exploited for sex is something that does happen, but there needs to be more evidence in this case.

We can say that about every politician. Where do we go from here?

It's at worst an anecdote on how bad the rental market has become. That's her goal, to raise awareness.

We don't know that's true either. This guy might have tried the same line with every female tenant he has ever had (and male too, sure why not) in good rental markets and bad.

isnt sex a meaningless and trivial act? haven't we separated sex and commitment through technology, drugs and social change?

    LOL. Survival cleaning.

The people in survival sex might not have been thinking very hard, might be very stupid (learning disabled) might have drug addictions, might have been coerced. What difference does it make?

If you don't want to understand the issues around survival sex, then there's no point me explaining them to you, is there?

You can make that argument if you want. I probably wouldn't agree.

i dunno...i think its clear there has been a sustained effort over the last 40 years to make sex as inconsequential as possible.

There is a lot of this carry on in England, students giving land lords blowjobs, etc for rent. I can't really comment, I would do the same, I probably would even give the blowjobs for free rent.

On second thoughts, it would be cheaper paying an escort as they would cost less than the money you lose on the rent.
