On a separate note, James Sugrue was named Men's amateur golfer of the year at the annual Irish Golf writers association awards ceremony, during the week. Annabel Wilson was named women's amateur golfer of the year. Shane Lowry was unsurprisingly named professional golfer of the year. While Des Smyth was given a standing ovation, after he was given the Distinguished services to golf award.

Tom McKibbin has reached the final of the Australian Amateur Championship. Brilliant stuff indeed. The Aussie locals are calling him Mini McIlroy and McIlroy 2.0, such are the parallels between both golfers. The final is due to start at 10 pm Irish time. In 2019, Portmarnock's Conor Purcell, now turned pro won this championship, so hopefully an Irish double awaits. Jed Morgan of Australia will be Tom's opponent in tomorrow's final.

The Amateur Championship started this morning. Plenty of Irish representation although I don't see our two highest ranked players in Sugrue and Rafferty among the field. Royal Birkdale the hosts this year.

The GUI advice is against any travel to tournaments outside of Ireland.
