South wall is older than O'Connell bridge! You learn something new every day.
I'm not a Dub but I'll bet you most Dubs would not know this.
Why don't RTÉ commission some Irish urban history docu stuff if they claim to be a PS broadcaster? Relatively cheap to make and endless source material.
Éamonn MacThomáis's stuff is decades ago.

Because the culchies would probably cry discrimination and start hurling sheep into the Dáil :p

History is cool, but it does not sell enough advertising to warrant a big production. Most of RTE's documentaries are political or social, history never really gets a look in.

This is what a world map would look like if you reorganised countries so that each country's population was reflected by its corresponding mass of land. So China, which has the largest population takes the place of Russia, which is the largest land mass

Interestingly, Ireland is one of the four countries which would not move, along with the US, Brazil and Yemen

One of the rare times where the use 'Interestingly' is actually warranted. Kudos.

I thought is was because they laid down chains (as in the actual standard chains made up of rods of the imperial measurement system).

But your reason makes as much sense.

    BTW: wikipedia
The chain is a unit of length equal to 66 feet (22 yards). It is subdivided into 100 links[1][2] or 4 rods. There are 10 chains in a furlong, and 80 chains in one statute mile.[2] In metric terms, it is 20.1168 m long.[2]

It was in our school textbook but those things can be wrong so who knows?

The longest possible straight land path according to Guy Bruneau, a cartographer at Google.

The line starts at about 10 km north of Greenville, Liberia, and ends near Wenling, China. The route runs through nine time zones and 18 countries and territories - Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Burkina Faso again, Niger, Chad, Libya, Egypt, Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan again and finally China.

It appears curved on a standard Mercator projection map, but this is an alternative projection that shows that it is straight.

And lots more names for German.
In Italy German people are called tedeschi because that's not going to get confusing.

That ties in nicely with one of my favourite Irish translation similarities:

    Albain - Scotland
    An Albáin - Albania

Alba for Sotland comes from an endonym, Albania is an exonym.

A map showing what people call their own country would be interesting.

I just discovered this thread and read it all.

Fascinating stuff, many thanks to all the contributors.

Just something that stuck with me about us Irish. We are happy and not very corrupt (probably cos we drink a lot).

How did you come to that conclusion from the thread?

Also, several Tribunals from the noughties would suggest otherwise.
We're not at the level of some country, but if there was a corruption Olympics, we could at least send a team.

The tedeschi was a building in Venice where german merchants lived.

Map showing all the river catchments in Ireland.

The Shannon catchment is in red (roughly in the Centre), that of the rivers Barrow, Nore and Suir are in pink, the Erne is in yellow and the Liffey and Boyle are in slightly different shades of pale green.
