Sweden is attempting to go Oil free,

Do you think we could too? Or are we inextricably linked with petroculture?
I feel that Ireland has wasted its chance to develop renewables and that now we are basically running to catch up.

    Good on the Swedes.

I'm sure we could do it too, given time, but that sort of tough decision-making would take a strong, cohesive government with a long-term vision on energy policy - with our track record on vested interests running the show, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Check out the other article on US efforts, seems some states are making the big step on their own without waiting for the Administration to set policy:

I honestly cannot see Ireland doing this. We as a country have never had a govt that has thought in the long term. Only short term lining their pockets.

I take my hat off to the Sweeds its a big step in the right direction. Now all we need is to replace those nuclear power plants with anitmatter and we are set.
