Here's a very important one I've been meaning to amend to the charter!

Bargain Alerts is NOT the place for any commercial interaction or advertising, whether you've a small or large company.

If you wish to advertise on Boards.ie, see details here. And if you wish to interact with consumers on Boards.ie, you can contact one of our Community Managers and ask for details about a 'Commercial Interaction' forum.

But please do not use Bargain Alerts as a medium.

UPDATE 14/03/2011:

If you're suspicious that a user may be promoting a website or product, please use the 'Report Post' function to let us know. DO NOT start an interrogation on thread. It both derails the thread and makes it a pain in the ass to get back on track.

UPDATE 25/01/2013:

All Referral links or URL shortening are not allowed on Bargain Alerts.

Example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_shortening can be shortened to http://bit.ly/urlwiki. Short URL will be removed.

So please remove any referral links from end of URL's to GroupOn etc before posting.

Thanks!

UPDATE 15/04/2013:

Referrals are not permitted on Bargain Alerts.

For those who are un-initated or unsure of what does or doesn't constitute a referral - the following should help you..

A referral is when you personally benefit from sharing a link or code - e.g "share this link to 5 of your friends and you'll get the deal for free!.

As mentioned, this typically comes complete with a personalised code or link:
  • A referral link is when there is a unique / personalised code at the end of a link - e.g
    Code:
    http://buysomethinghere.com/buythisitem.html?userID=22992
    (note the userID parameter)
  • A referral code is typically a unique / personalised code given out to users from busineses to entice people to use their code. But do note - there is a difference between a generic voucher code (e.g 20OFF) and a personalised referral code. We can make the call on this if you're unsure.
If you're unclear on whether you might be posting a referral, feel free to PM one of the Bargain Alert moderators who'll hopefully be able to clarify. But if you're not sure and you post, don't be suprised to see your thread deleted.

Gearbest Shilling on Bargain Alerts

For those of you who don't know what shilling is, it's when someone represents a brand/shop/product by making recommendations on their behalf when they have a vested interest - either by virtue of the fact that they're an employee of the shop/brand or they've been offered some sort of reward for it.

There is *NOTHING* more insidious and downright evil on a forum like this than shilling. It completely poisons the well of a resource like our Bargain Alerts forum if someone thinks that recommendations and "bargains" can't be trusted.

[edit 01-06-'16]
As you may be aware, Gearbest have now entered into an advertising contract with Boards.ie. Some of you will think this is a good idea, and some bad. The very first Commercial Interaction forums here on Boards came about when a company had broken the rules and had been posting on the site without permission to help their customers/our members out. It has always been the Boards.ie policy to attempt to turn those that would exploit our platform and its members into meaningful contributors. In the case of businesses, it's to get them officially on-board and paying for their advertising. This is what we've managed with Gearbest.

Any appetite for tackling the handful of posters whose only contribution to bargain alerts is to post non constructive posts such as "where is the bargain" in as many threads as possible? Seems to really leave a negative tone in the forum and inevitably leads to threads going off topic and I can only assume some posters not bothering to post bargains in fear of being ridiculed. It really is only a handful of posters who need to be told to cop on.

While this has been a problem for a few years it's beyond a joke lately and these type of posts are really no different to back modding.

FYI just to clarify I (and as far as I can tell most other posters) have no issue with posters who genuinely query a bargain by countering with a cheaper price, the type of posters who I think are ruining the forum are the miserable post whores who post a handful of words such as "where is the bargain" / "not a bargain" etc with no evidence of a counter price

I see there are more smartarses ruining threads today. While in one case a mod did react as long as it's just a friendly this is not helpful mod post nothing will change.

Do mods care to give a reply? I mentioned my post above to ye already. If not I will be forced to post a thread on feedback as the spirit of bargain alerts is being drained away

Btw it looks like plenty of folk are sick of this carry on so can the mods please do something on this issue. I posted the below and considering it's buried in a quiet locker thread the number of thanks clearly tells a story

Posters are already banned for reasons that you outlined, including posting 'wheres the bargain'.

If you report posts we will deal with them. We cant respond to each reported post but that doesn't mean we didn't take any action. You can also PM myself or other mods if you have issues. Posting in threads may not be seen as we not read every single post.
