Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    That letter is so transparent it's laughable (pro tip : surely it should be OUR mountains, OUR city, OUR kind people - just plays better, no?) .. Still, better handwriting than I have these days :p

    Dead on handwriting for a one handed man.....oh sorry, didnt his cell mate glue his hand back together as he was a world leading plastic surgeon or something?

    I'm more impressed with how the prison guards provided him with two different colour pens, considering the "awful" treatment he got. I'd have to tear this house apart to find even a both blue and black pens at once, let alone the elusive red.

    Why even was 3 years highlighted in red anyways? Was he worried his dad wouldn't remember how long its been, and needed to remind him several times in one letter...hell, remind him several times in one paragraph!

    Now the cynic in me would say it looked very much like a propaganda piece to drive home the 3 years message but dis poor, poor lad wouldn't be part of this kind of nonsense now would he!

    At one point in March this year, he became so weak that jail staff used a wheelchair to bring him to a family prison visit"

    How the fcuk did he leave prison so overweight?

    Not sure about him being a leader but there is some connection there, I believe.

    It was the media's creation. They gave him special priority because he was Muslim and non-white. They relentlessly pushed the story (especially the Journal and RTE) until the politicians decided they would gain brownie points from the media if they were seen to do something.
    The shinner element that supported him were of the far left variety (who should really be in PBP) and only on the basis of identity politics therefore guilt or otherwise was irrelevant.
    There was support also from some NGOs either out of self interest or naive stereotyping.
    That these groups now have egg in their faces and we hear nothing about it just a deafening silence is indicative of the general grandstanding dishonesty of the media in particular and how they never admit to having being wrong unless forced to. It should be a lesson to them but they will just keep ploughing merrily on with their own agenda indifferent to popular opinion and be taken increasingly less seriously as time goes by.

    the media simply reported the information given. they are guilty of nothing from what i can see.
    Dont you thinkthat the Media aresuposed to critically examine the story, rather than simply parrot the version they are given. Theylike to hold themselves up as an essential pillar of democracy but it seems to me, that many of them have become lazy and merely repeact, parrot like, the press releases they are given, by interested parties. Isnt it a regular thing now, that in interviews such as with Halawa or his sisters, its normal for the interviewer to be informed of what is allowed and what is not allowed to be mentioned in the interview. Surely, if they are to justify their self appointed position of moral superiority to the rest of us, its incumbent on them to ask the questions, unpleasant or not, that WE want asked, and not just be a mouthpiece for who or whatever their so called guest happens to represent

    yes, of course. however, the days of critical and quality journalism in the mainstream seem to be gone.

    ticking a box on a form does not make you of a religion.

    Why did he sign the letter twice and with his full name too? Have the other sons in Egyptian prisons the might mix up? It is like a child pretending to be their parent!

    Sadly, with the advent of the 24 hr news cycle, increase in # of news media competition and the likes of "BREAKING NEWS" and "EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW", most news groups will accede to the persons demands to ensure they get the exclusive, however brief or off topic, as a lot of folks just want the news fast & fresh...but dont care much for its details, sadly.

    The sense of entitlement from him and his family stretches to the high heavens and all the state has done is bend over backwards for them when they have never deserved it and now he's on his high horse complaining about being on the LLS give us a bloody break ffs.

    Isnt that the whole point tho, they stop being the investigative force, seeking the truth, that they are supposed to be, and instead become a mouthpiece. Its things like this which lead to people believing in Alt News and Fake news as they simply cannot trust traditional media. It is resting on the laurels of previous generations, and no longer fulfils its traditional role. Its only a matter of time befoe it dies, in its present form. Newspaper sales are falling through the floor, and eventually the likes of RTE etc wont be able to resist the tide of change that is washing over them. Lets see if Fr Ray can still get €400k a year or Uncle Joe who only has to work school days and gets Department of Education holiday times

    He’s doing himself no favours with montrose. I was sure he or the sisters were going to be given a radio or tv show on RTÉ upon his return.

    PBP mouth pieces Brid smith and Boyd Barrett were very vocal in thier support of halawa when he was in jail

    Could be they misunderstand the politics of the situation , i would not be surprised

    Labour might be interested in Halawa, but he does seem rather to be a rather nice but dim sort of chap. I think he wouldn't really pass muster at any sort of interview by the Labour veterans. I shed no tears over him, but from what I've seen of him he doesn't seem to be a nasty or dis-likeable chap as an individual. Just extremely limited brain-cells. I'd like to think he was just following orders, and he was the poor git left without a chair when the music stopped.

    His sisters seem to be the real pieces of work. I almost feel sorry for poor Ibrahim being paraded around as a political prop by them. He has already lost years of his life for it.

    Spot on, he seems to be thick as two short planks. Hope he does run for any kind of position in the public eye, it’s highly entertaining. Digging a hole for himself and the MB/relatives.
