    Typical of the coward.
    Jumps ship before he's pushed.
    What do you think?

Not the least bit surprised. Now if only the rest of the i'mFF would follow.

I would assume by resigning he gets to keep some sort of entitlements somewhere along the way rather than having them removed if sacked...

Sure that's the same that nearly every politician does, resign keep the perks before you get culled.

He stresses that this is a political decision, and not in any way an admission of wrongdoing.

The article reiterates his rejection of the Tribunal's findings, and confirms he is considering options for vindicating his good name.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0324/mahon.html

He had every opportunity, countless times, at the tribunal to set the record straight ..... not once did he convince the tribunal that he was telling the truth. That is some achievement IMO. Now he is considering his options. How about emigration?

personally i believe its all a New and Improved FF ploy. A few years back, they were all backslapping bertie and before the **** started stirring, they loved him. Now they believe publicly getting rid of him will convince the rest of us that FF arent really corrupt - only Bertie was. And the worst thing is people will fall for it.

not according to Bertie, "I am not a crook" Ahern.:D

A smart move from a smart man.
The greatest trick the Devil ever played was convincing us he doesn't exist.

FF will turn the scandal on it head and milk his departure for what its worth and the gullible amongst us will fall for it too.

I think that will open the door for renewed focus on the part of Mahon that talked about some ministers attempts to collapse the tribunal.

There could be more damage there yet.

The FF executive don't have to accept his resignation. If Martin wishes to retain what little credibility he has, he should be dragging Smartass Bertie through the keyhole of the meeting room in order to deliver the meeting's sacking of him.:(

    MOD NOTE:

There is a fine line between righteous outrage and mindless ranting. There isn't a lot of tolerance for the latter in this forum, so if you can't keep it civil - i.e. you can't post without resorting to calling Ahern a cnut, turd, bastard, etc - then you are posting in the wrong forum.

Consider this a general warning - there will not be any more on this thread.

Yes indeed, they should rubber stamp it so Ahern does not have the last word. Martin is weak though and tainted with Ahern's legacy, so it will suit him to do nothing.

Ah thats disappointing, I wanted to see the carnage the attempt to throw him out would cause.

I think he is right in the sense that it would cause division so this is probably the best thing to happen for FF - although I suspect they had all this planned in advance.

as Joe Higgans said FF should disband

Poor Joe Higgins and his socialist party should disband - he just has to be kept remind that Fianna Fáil has a mandate in opposition, having secured 17.5% of the first preference vote during the last election.

It is a far cry from the 0.6% that Higgins and his socialist comrades secured. :)

Completely true, but yet a prime example of statistical bollixology.

FF and it's ilk would be better reminded to keep the smug smilies behind their own closed doors.

Very cute move of him to resign without suffering the further disgrace of being a former leader that got kicked out, and have the audacity to say he's doing it for the party. I'd say he got PR advice, and they told him that this was the best way of damage limitation.

Sunday Times has FF on 10% in the wake of the mahon report.

I'm pleased the reported level of thickness has declined 7.5%.

    Still way too high.

Given that the Devil doesn't actually exist I don't know what that does for your analogy

Totally meaningless. Ahern knew he was out, he just left before he was evicted so that he might try and maintain some claim on his own dignity.

The National Executive will still pass some (equally meaningless) gesture condemning Ahern next week, I am certain.

I really believe and hope that Fianna Fail will come back from the events of the past twelve months.
But if its leadership are only ever interested in playing to the indignant critics who will always find some reason to vent their wrath, it will never recover. Time to stop with the meaningless gestures. They're just fodder for the perpetually furious.

There are events in this country that are causing people to actually lose sleep at night, lose their homes, and lose their sense of personal security. Much of these are, in part, because of Fianna Fail. That's what Fianna Fail need to re-examine. I really don't think anybody is losing sleep over Bertie. If they are, they must have precious little to worry about.

It's time to get over Bertie.

  • Registered Users Posts: 109 ✭✭Firegaurd

Ok do FF actually think people believe that they are so ashamed of Bertie that they were going to expell him.

Three weeks ago they were applauding him at their Ard Heis. Did they actually need the tribunal report to confirm that he was lying to the tribunal.

The dogs in the street knew his stories were laughable. If they had any moral fibre they would have expelled him when he resigned as Taoiseach.

What difference does it make to anybody anyway if he is still a member of FF. He should be investigated by the Revenue commissioners and the gardai and any suspected wrong doings should be followed through.

    Party pap.

As long as gurriers like him still strut about grabbing 3k a week plus from the public purse while citizens of this country lose sleep then there is plenty to be furious about.
Justice and accountability needs to be seen to be done before any ridiculuous "rebirth" of your organisation.

    Country first.

    That is absolute rubbish.

I agree with you in regards the investigation though - where the money actually came from should be identified. Furthermore he has a tax bill that needs paying.

Ahern is shocked at the corruption that has been unvealed in Fianna Fail. He is disgusted with Fianna Fail and its corrupt ways. He is leaving because he does not want to be associated with such a rotten and corrupt party.
