Need to cleanup more space on my C drive

    So far
    • I've run a Disk Cleanup
    • I've cleared out Recycle Bin
    • I've deleted as many un-used Programs as possible
    Any other ideas?

Is there a go to little bit of software you can recommend for a cleanup?

Programs seem to be getting bigger and bigger these days and it's getting harder to juggle things around on my current laptop's C drive

    Thanks

Have a look at your C:\Windows\Installer folder, which is probably hidden. Google for advice on the rights and wrongs of deleting its contents.

Do I need the Intel Proset Wireless software? It's 230 Mb in size

    Google is giving mixed answers

For example; can I change Wi-fi routers/companies without it?

Have a look at something like cc cleaner.

    https://download.cnet.com/CCleaner/3000-18512_4-10315544.html

How large is your hard drive, and how much space is left?

Thanks but doesn't CC Cleaner wipe all my remembered passwords?

The C drive is tiny by 2020 standards. It has 800 Mb free and 26 Gb used

I honestly can't fathom what is taking up 26 Gb on the C drive

Look in c:\windows\temp - you can safely delete the contents of that folder. Then get TreeSize - it will scan the drive and list the contents in order of size, you can pick and choose what can be deleted and uninstalled. You could also buy an external HD or if there's a port an SD card to give yourself more space.
But the best solution would be to but a new machine with a larger disk, see laptopsdirect.ie

SpaceSniffer is a good tool for visualising what is taking up space as well.

    32GB laptop by chance?
    Win10 alone is~20GB
Any oustanding updates will consume anywhere up to 8GB

Did you click "Clean up system files" on the Disk Cleanup prompt?

Yes and never again. it was bought for some fairly light tasks hence the low budget at the time

But it's no excuse for how much space Windows takes up these days. I haven't been able to install the updates for over a year because of how big they are

32 Gb and lower laptops should be taken off the market

Buy cheap, buy twice unfortunately when it comes to these crappy 32GB eMMC laptops. An extra €100 would have bought something that might be fit for purpose.

You won't need the bulk of its functionality, but removing it may remove your wifi driver - depending on whether Windows has a built in one for it or not.

Download a copy to a USB key before trying.

As basically you have no data stored on it - fresh install every time MS release major update/upgrade
Course you will loose all settings, passwords stored on browser, etc. - small inconvenience compare to wasted money on "mickey mouse" device...
    :D

    Good advise
The Wi-Fi driver only package can be found in the download page for the IT Admins.

Default is yes, but you can prevent that.

You could also try something called treesize, which goes through your computer and tells you what is using the most space.

32 GB is obviously very small these days, but not much you can do about that now. Windows updates can take a lot of space. Have a look at this article, if you haven't seen similar already.

I didn't realise it was only 32GB. I would suggest save what you want to a thumb drive and then install ubuntu.

this is the best advice barring buying a new laptop

Also, as well as system files, check into further options when cleaning up and delete all older versions of Windows

You'll want to minimise virtual ram etc too, tho there'll be a knock on effect in performance

Is there any option to just install a second drive

It's been years since I used this

How can I use it but still keep all passwords on the laptop? Is there an option?
