ya, but with aer lingus & aer france both operating that route from cork the only hope would be that ryanair will step in at shannon

Ryanair only fly to Beauvais, which requires a 90min €17 bus trip to Porte Maillot and a further 60min €20 'Le Bus Direct' to CDG or another 90mins, train hopping from RER A to B.

Not confirmed but word is Aer Lingus will announce Paris and Barcelona next week for Summer 2020 from SNN. This would be fantastic news if it comes off.

Seems this thread was rather premature, numbers haven't even fallen yet. New route announcements.

We really have a gloom attitude towards our airports in Ireland.

Cannot post a full link but as predicted CDG and BCN to be announced tomorrow. Great news for SNN and these routes should prove popular and be well supported.

What plane will service these routes and will it continue on across the atlantic?

Barcelona in the summer will provide a great route for families heading to campsites etc from Salou up the coast into South of France. I’ve flown Dub- BCN a couple of times to do this and I’m delighted I will be able to go from SNN this time around.
Hopefully some more European city destinations will follow

A320. It'll fly to Heathrow the rest of the day.

The new A321LR will fly in from the US, then on the early LHR, then back to the US at lunchtime

If it makes other flights at Shannon more viable by stimulating transfer traffic then I'm all for it.

What if it doesn't, and these flights are simply sustainable just by themselves and don't have an effect on the US routes? Would you then not 'be for it'?

One of the things that need to happen is the option to fly directly into Shannon from the USA (Chicago). As someone who grew up in the States, we would always fly direct into Shannon. It was always much more convenient for us.

The route to Chicago only ended in 2017.

The key word in his post is "more viable" If it boosts numbers on other routes then it will help sustain these other routes, as well as help sustain the BCN and CDG routes themselves and perhaps increase frequencies on same, and perhaps encourage EI to introduce more US routes from Shannon over a longer season.

This is 100% aimed at transfer pax out of the US and not at local O&D at all, nice boost for the airport numbers all the same and a nice bonus for return pax in clearing US CBP in the quieter Shannon hall.

I think EI have publically stated that 40-50% of their transatlantic numbers into/out of Dublin are transfers.

So for these new routes out of Shannon, both transfers and O&D traffic is required to make it viable.
Its not a question of these routes being aimed at A or B, its a question of EI being able to devote an airframe to a route which was previously not as profitable as SNN-JFK/BOS. This new route will require both A and B to ensure its viability.

Great to see Barcelona with someone other than Ryanair. Hope the pricing will be right and aimed at short break market and not business class.

Access to AL Lounge will be nice for the missus as a treat and of course the Aer Lingus friendliness will be a huge welcome.

I’d tend to agree and think it would be great if EI had a mini hub in SNN, but not all of these flights are timed to allow connections

Still numbers declining for shannon compared to Dublin and Cork..
Surely with the motorway developments from Galway to Limerick and the M8 it should have been able to capitalised on this. Plus it has the advantages of a longer runway than Cork.
In April flew one friday to Edinburgh. Apart from a flight to New York after it there was going to be no other departure for nearly 3 hours.
Yes the Boeing issue I'd out of their control the Toronto route was one with potential.
The M8 goes nowhere near Shannon, but an M20 would certainly help.

Will Shannon have 2 A321neo based here when these commence?

Is there still more potential for extra routes with the second A321? Would an Amsterdam route be viable using the second A321 once it's in place?

    1) Yes they should.
    2) Unlikely as they do need a maintenance window for them!
