Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

whats best antivirus for windows 8.1 laptop

    Bought a laptop last year and now macafee is up for renewal - reluctant to pay the stupid prices to renew macafee - just not sure what to install in place for best protection - any advice or pointers would be appreciated :-) thanks in advance

    Windows 8.1 comes with built windows defender - just do a search in top r-hand corner.

    I also use malwarebytes , and I downloaded the one on bargain alerts last week and it works great .

    360 total security...does the job, its free and has relatively good online reviews.

    Use either Windows Defender or Avast Free Antivirus along with Malwarebyes and your machine will be well protected.

    Common Sense goes a long way. :) Most Antiviruses are useless nowadays, sure they will protect you from out-dated basic viruses but people just FUD their viruses nowadays making them undetectable for sometime.

    Malware-bytes is always nice to have.

    There's more to a good security package than basic AV detection (as in signature based). It's a fallback for everyone who will recommend free vs. paid, and in that sense it's true. What isn't mentioned is you need to pay to get advanced and effective features like HIPS, reputation services (both DNS and file), inline web protection (protocol, exploit etc.) and a host of others that are usually not included in web bake-offs since you need to buy the premium versions and most reviewers will try to compare apples to apples...in the process ignoring what actually makes a difference.

    E.g. Compare Kaspersky AV to a good free alternative - not a huge difference. Now compare that freebee to their Total Security package...night and day.
