I'm with Carole Nash and have been for years.

€350 odd for comp. on my Escort MkII RS2000, with a high agreed value, and pan European break down recovery.

I'm not sure what the max. mileage is 4 or 5k p.a. as I don't get next or near it.

Hi guys, great thread, yery informative. I'm 22 and have a daily driver insured fuly comp. I'm looking at an '89 Golf GTI for a weekend / show car. The two problems I can see are 1) My age and 2) The age of the car. Is there any company who can quote me a decent figure, I was quoted over 5k to insure it as a daily driver. Also I was told that my current no claims bonus doesn't apply because it's a second car, and a second poicy.
    Thanks for any help.

I don't think you will be able to get classic insurance until you hit 25 at a minimum and for some cards this may go up to 30 years old.

It is also right that you will not get any no claims discount on the second car. You have to work this up.

Hey, look on the bright side, at 22 you have loads of years left to enjoy your classics!!

Thanks to you guys, I got an excellent deal on my insurance policies (3 cars) with First Ireland. The other companies I contacted were an outright waste of time and money. Thanks again.

I'm trying to get insurance for my fiat 500 even just as a named driver but i've only got a provisional license and i'm only 24. Is there any company who'll even give me a quote i think i've phoned about 15 so far.

:confused: Can you take out a policy on a non-Irish reg car? I know some companies dont ask questions with temp. transferals from regular policies, but what about a proper classic policy? Younger classics would require an nct (impossible with out a re-reg) where as older classics may only require an engineers report. Would it cause you trouble where vrt is concerned? Has anyone had any hassle?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 103 ✭✭giardiniera

well mine has a northern reg but apparently you can insure it with the old number and when you re-register it you can just switch the cover over.
mines 42 so its exempt from an nct but i'm not really sure about the practical side of all of this cause its not on the road yet so the fun will start in about 3 weeks. hopefully it'll all go well tho.

I'm sorry to introduce a whiff of dodginess on this civilised forum but can anybody tell me how diligent their insurance companies are when asking for documentation....or is it very much a case of when they've got your cash they're happy? Is it all mainly over the phone or do they ask you for faxes of your license and evidence of other insurance policies?

  • Registered Users Posts: 25 demc7

I realise that the age limit is 25, but what is the story if I get somebody over that age insured on the car, and then get myself put on as a named driver? I'm 18 and the car in question is a Corvette.
    Thanks guys

Far as I know, companies are dog-wide to all the strokes. they have seen it all bfore, and know what you're up to a lot of the time when you try something.
The worrying part is that they operate on the basis of uberima fidei - the utmost good faith. In other words, you try pull a stroke, and they may let you, but will void your cover if anything happens and even send out an investigator to prove what they suspect.

I had a '67 Merc 250S insured through Carole Nash but the policy was underwritten by Royal and Sun Alliance.

In mid Feb my wife opened the car door without doing a "lifesaver" check and a truck virtually took the door off it's hinges (Mrs A thankfully shaken but unharmed!)

It took until June for the insurance to settle even though I was fully comp - they wanted me to pay 25% of teh repair bill. The basis of this was that the door was nearly 40 years old and a new door would "improve" the car, leaving me better off than before the accident, which they couldn't allow! The autorised body shop that I was told to use were utterly and totally hopeless as well.

After I threatened to take them to the Ombudsman and sue thier sorry behinds they rolled over and settled in full but it was a mighty battle. I ended up selling the car unrepaired and pocketing the insurance settlement but the "new" car is insured by First Ireland and I won't be using CN again.

My policy was up today so decided to make a call or two. Premium €350 odd for comp. 2000 miles, garaged, 2nd car, and including Pan European breakdown cover.

Rang Axa and left a message. The never rang back. Lost interest in them.

Rang First Ireland, and a really helpful lady quoted me €290 for exactly what I had, and allowing for a Max. NCB which didn't exist under the current policy (Carole Nash/R.S.A.)Furthermore she said they's allow "laid up cover" for the winter simply by returning cert. and disc, which my current insurers wouldn't do.

Carol Nash when informed of the difference came down to €310 odd.

For €290 which will essentially cover 2 summers (laid up for 6 months free of charge) I think I've got to move.

Have to say I'd agree - as I said above CN were pitiful when I had to make a claim - they passed teh whole thing through to the underwriters who did thier level best to shaft me.

Someone should make them aware of this page - maybe then they'd change thier attitude, more competition has to be a good thing!

    RE IVS insurance.

The rates are great, and the mileage allowance is generous BUT>>>

Customer service isn't exactly their forte. Perhaps they are feeling the strain of so much new business? Phone calls can leave you feeling like a Jehovah's witness at the door.
Also there may be a delay of 21 to 26 days in gettiong your policy! This wasn't mentioned when I parted with my fee.

    Hi All
Iirish Vintage Society is probably the best (and cheapest to go through) it is third party but most classic insurance is and let's be fair unless the car is worth a fortune you don't need fully comp (and if it is worth a fortune you can bloody well afford fully comp!) They also offer discounts if you want to insure extra cars (120 for 2nd , 90 for 3rd) myself and my brother have a few cars and we find it very handy. By the way I have a 1973 MGB GT for restoration if anyones interested! Needs a lot of work would be a good winter project!

    Hi all,

AXA refused to quote me for using a classic car as my only car but I pestered them and they agreed, providing I gave an engineers report.

I also rang First Ireland and they quote me their own policy with a 10k limit.
For no mileage limit they quote Hibernian and St Paul.

Only really started thinking about this tonight so excuse my first post on this forum being a typical newbie "can I?".

My dream car, above all your Porsches and Ferraris, was a Lancia Delta Integrale for many years. Now I find myself 34 years old with my daily car insured with full no claims and I spot an Integrale on Carzone that's 15 years old and not hugely expensive.

Am I right in thinking that some companies will give classic insurance on a 15 year old car? Am I also right in thinking that the tax office will be looking for their full pound of flesh until the car is 20 years old? I know it's pure laziness but I'm hoping you guys can give me all the answers I want in one go.

    TIA

You are, however normally only for "special" cars, for instance my daily driver is a 15 year old Mazda, that hardly a classic and just gets insured normally. Is a 91 MX5 a classic, maybe, a 91 Rolls, probably etc.

No, until its thirty years old.

ok, so I was in a hurry and I only made 3 calls....axa said my car had to be 25yrs or older, first ireland didnt answer their phone and carol nash told me everything i wanted to hear......so i signed up and handed over the ever so important cash. WooHoo Im insured but it was then that I got to read the small print. For a start, I'm only covered against theft and d##kheads dancing on my car IF it happens on my driveway and nowhere else AND only if it happens between the hours of 10pm and 6am!!! W.T.F.!!!! How ridiculous is that!! They offer all sorts of nice percs such as breakdown recovery/assistance etc. European cover as well as decent prices for extra vehicles, but if I'm not insured against idiots and thieves outside of these restrictions, my policy isn't much use. I can see the owner of ANY car being upset with these restrictions, let alone someone who obviously cherishes their car and wants maximum protection 24/7 while being able to enjoy the freedom of just hitting the road, as the policy is supposedly taylored for. That means no D##khead cover should your car be nicked or damaged in a carpark, at a show, meet or run, or even if you decide to take the roof down and hit the road for the long weekend. It also states that the car must be in road worthy condition and have its NCT which is worrying for anyone taking their car off the road for a while to carry out some work or even for those still on UK or other foreign regs. who obviously can't possibly have an NCT,but yet they offer cover for them. Surely by this clause they technically wouldnt have to pay up in the event of a claim. So between these restrictions and escape routes on top of the fact that insurance co.s will usually try everything they can to get out of a payment anyway, I've come to the conclusion that I may have rushed into things a little and perhaps I should have tried to call First Ireland back  always a lesson to be learned! I am happy however with the price and percs, friendliness of staff and ease in taking out a policy with them. All of this is irrelevant though if I've got gaps in my cover.

    Picture it....

...its been a long day and you've just spent the last 2 hours stuck in traffic in your daily, plastic, economical box. Barely hanging together because you've just spent the last of your cash on those chrome bumpers you've been promising yourself and if you've gotta choose which car to spend it on......you know in your soul it cant be the micra, not unless you really really have to. Or perhaps you're one of the luckier ones who found a tidy mini before a heap cost 2k. Either way, tough, because while you were at work, some f**cker ripped off your house, loaded all your favorite cds and dvds into your prized possession and headed off for a burn before burning it out in a lonely carpark somewhere (which you shouldn't be parked in) and swapping your music collection for a nokia so he can video call his mates from the next house he rips off and post it on the net....... Shame you werent covered...... shame you fit those bumpers last weekend! :(

Hello forum! Another point to note, with my policy (CN) there is no premium refund if you sell your classic during the insurance term. I sold my Mgb not long after renewing the policy and was told there would be no refund due to it being a limited mileage policy. I will definitely check out first Ireland come renewal time for my current classic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 hellcamino

According to my policy details I can get a refund but its only a percentage or something, less fees etc. Probably wont amount to much

I spoke to C.N. about the particulars of the policy I wasn't happy about and heres how it works:
One of the requirements of the comprehensive policy is that you must have a garage to keep the car in at night. In the event of you not parking it in the garage and it getting nicked off your drive, you’re not covered. However, if you decide to go away for the weekend in your classic and it gets nicked from outside a restaurant or where ever, you are covered (because you obviously couldn’t park it in your garage) So basically I’m covered for theft for everywhere other than my drive? The sentence reads as follows, how would you interpret it?

“we will only provide cover for theft, attempted theft or malicious damage between the hours of 10pm and 6am if your car is garaged at home or at any other garaging address we have agreed”

Does it mean the when the car’s at home, its only covered during the night if its indoors?
    or
They only offer cover during those hours if the car is at home, in the garage?

I’m thinking it’s the first one.

Aside from this, my policy is €150 cheaper than the 1st Ireland quote I got and its cheaper to add extra cars to my policy too. 1sT Ireland also only allows 2k miles on your 2nd or subsequent classic.

Got the renewal notice from 1st Ireland (AIG Europe). It is ... €5 cheaper than last year!! Unheard of!!

Can vouch for the Irish Vintage Society. Have my '84 500SEC insured through them. Membership is 30 euro and insurance approx 180 (its with Hibernian). Also any member of the society over 25 with a full license is insured to drive it. Therefore to add additional drivers (over 25 etc.) you just need to join them in the IVS.

    http://www.odon.com/motor-insurance-quote.html

260 euro comp for a 40+ year old with a car valued at about 8 grand. You need a seperate policy for everyday runabout and a garage though.

    Mike.

Recently I asked about the IVS policy when speaking with Hibernian about my everyday car policy. The IVS policy apparantly only covers travel to and from 'events'... Dunno what to make of that. Hardly a conclusive answer. Currently insured with Carole Nash and don't like the sound of their small print.

I want to insure 4 cars in the 20+ age bracket at next renewal. Combined mileage under 5k per annum, access to everyday driver (spouse's car). Is there a simple and cheap solution???
