How much to pay friend for doing my hair

My best friend is a hairdresser and he is doing a balayage for me. I have given him the money to buy the supplies needed. I asked how much I should pay him on top of this but he said he is uncomfortable setting a price and told me I should pay whatever I think.

I'm not sure how much to give him, any suggestions on what a fair price is?

Perhaps tot up the money for supplies versus how much it costs you in a salon, and maybe meet half way? A friend cuts my hair sometimes and he charges me about half of what I usually pay in salon for cut and blowdry.

What do you think would be a fair price OP?

I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking. And seeing as you answered with “three fifty” to my post, I wouldn’t really be interested in answering your question even if I did know.

I got a balayage (with two lots of toners applied to get the right colour to come out) done there yesterday with a cut in my regular salon all for €140. I have medium length hair.

As others said, pay for the supplies that he will use and make a decision on what you think his time and work is valued at.

30 an hour would be plenty for him

That could mean she pays him 90 quid. I would expect it to take 3 hrs with the blow dry included. Plus supplies that is as much as a hairdressers. I would think she is paying 30 at least for supplies.

    50 quid.

Honestly if you were my friend and you bought all the supplies i would have no issue doing it for you for free if you were a friend. But 50 and and the supplies is fine.

You can't really buy supplies alone just for one head you have to buy in bulk...so he can use the rest for other people.

This is why doing business with friends is an issue. Hes uncomfortable telling you how much he want but you could insult him by paying him to little. Deduct the costs of the materials from what you would pay a salon for and give him the balance and get it done in a salon anymore or at the very least have an agreed price before you let him touch your hair again.

I hate these kind of arrangements, should really have insisted on a price. Do you have any friends that he's worked on before that you can ask how much they gave?

50 seems low but 90 seems so high. Maybe 60 and a bottle of wine or something like that.

Humm, its tricky... I'd say maybe 50% of the salon price + supplies? Although I do think it would be much easier if he just named his price.

My friend cuts my hair (I'm not grey yet and I just have long straight hair). I typically come into her salon whenever suits her and she fits me in around colour clients or hair extension clients since my hair only takes 30 minutes, so I think she's using time that she couldnt really sell otherwise as shes quite specialised in terms of colour and extensions so wouldnt just be taking random clients for trims only.

She never lets me pay her but I always make a note to either bring her a small gift or take her for lunch.
