    One of the War of Independence witness statements makes reference to "Du Cros'" having the only working telephone in or around Oakley Road in 1916. Now, this may be the particular witness's batty tendency to gossip but get the facts wrong. But it struck me as just faintly possible that some member of the Du Cros family (who lived in 40 Cullenswood Avenue, which is to say 40 Oakley Road, in the 1850s) might have married, changed her name, but lived in the same family. A bit of a long shot, but any helpful suggestions gladly accepted before ruling this out…

    shanew, I've already looked at phone books, thomses, censuses, multiple varied online searches and all came up empty. I've come to the conclusion that it wasn't true. But just in case one of the Du Cros female line (though they seem not to have trended pink) might have married and changed her name, I thought I might ask if anyone had any inside knowledge.

    The Du Cros' were early investors in Dunlops and there is a bit about them in the book on John Boyd Dunlop by Jim Cooke.
