How many games do you get a year with Plus? 25-30 for 50 quid? Even if you play half of them, that's great value.

I think the issue is it used to be much greater value. There used to be 8-12 games up for download for a few months at a time, at least half of which were full AAA titles. I remember Hitman Absolution was on PS+ for free only about 6 months after its release.

Now you get two <€30 (usually €10-15) games a month.

It's still good value, just not as good a value as it used to be and as we'd come to expect. Publishers should be pushing for some of their older AAA games to be released on Plus whether in anticipation of an upcoming sequel or to maybe get a few more DLC sales out of them. When I got Sleeping Dogs on PS3 for free, I spent about €15 on some of the DLC packs.

When you get similar games on the google play or app store for free, it's really not. PS4 is out long enough now to start putting out some retail titles, games you'd actually pay money for. It's not too much to ask is it? The Indies have taken up space since it launched, time for something different if they want to compete with GWG (which is now miles ahead in terms of value compared to PS Plus, regardless what anybody says).

Why would they be bothered competing with GWG? There's almost twice as many PS4s out there compared to xBox Ones. There's no real incentive for them to offer retail games unfortunately.

Mind you. I still get enough games and discounts out of it to justify €50 a year.

That's the problem, they are too comfortable handing out crap because they know the sub is required to play online. If they seperated that, I'd be very interested to see the figures of people who hold on to PS Plus. MS is winning hands down at the moment between BC and offering games that suit the console rather than a smartphone.

I've not played any PS+ games that looked suitable for a smartphone.

Plus used to be a genuine bargain. Like even before they starting putting the AAA PS3 games on it when it was more Indie-focused the array of fun titles that we were getting made it a steal. Clearly when they moved to PS4 the focus of it fundamentally shifted to it being about paying for a PSN that was suitable and strong enough for online gaming. The games are a minor compensation, from Sony's perspective.

They won't split it out from the paying for online thing because the paying for online thing is the whole point. The games offering for Plus was never an exercise in making a profit, even for the PS3 it was clearly a loss-leader done to get us used to paying that sort of money once a year.

They have no intention or desire to compete with GWG.

For what people are paying on both ecosystems, I believe we're getting value for money. But if you were to make direct comparisons between the two, the value you are receiving for PS+ is actually greater than GWG for the most part.

    http://uk.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/PlayStation_Plus_vs._Games_with_Gold_Comparison

Obviously there's significant caveats to this, such as:
    • Not all games are going to be everyone's cup of tea.
    • The prices are set by their respective services, as opposed to what people would reasonably expect to pay for those games.
    • Not everyone has all the consoles that can play all the 'free' games (i.e. you may have a PS4 and PS3, but not have a Vita)
    • You could argue the two extra games on Plus dilutes its quality in comparison to GWG, but then again some people like getting Vita/PS3 games, in addition to PS4 titles. That sorta plays into the previous point as well.

Personally speaking though, I get value for money from my Plus subscription, without a doubt. Owning all the applicable PlayStation systems is a massive help in this regard, obviously, but I don't ever feel envious of the GWG titles to be honest.

And in fairness, a lot of the GWG titles being handed out to date are playing catch-up with PS+ in that they were already made available to Plus subscribers before GWG was even a thing.

GWG is great too, I just don't think this moaning or willy waving is ever justified.

I think the discounts are an underrated part of the value actually. I probably save a fiver four or five times a year with various PS+ discounts on reduced priced items. Assuming that the pre-PS+ discount price would have been the true Sale price if Plus didn't exist then that's half the cost back already.

All down to taste, but when I look at that chart GWG is comfortably better for all of 2016.

As you said if you owned PS3/Vita along with the PS4 it's a much better value service. I think the fact that the 4 GWG games are playable on Xbox One helps a lot. I only have my PS4 since March and outside of Gone Home and EGTTR (which I haven't started yet) nothing has really appealed to me. Journey was a good offering but I had already bought that.

BUT GWG was absolute muck for a long long time though, it's only really this year it has improved and it's because MS is playing underdog.

I had 2 ps subs expire aswell and can't see myself renewing either again, I get no value anymore at all from ps+(Member since around 6 months after it originally launched)personally both ms and PlayStation's latest consoles have been a massive let down, a generation of remasters, and underpowered
Machines, my Xbox sub runs out next month and it won't be renewed either,

The fact that they compared Wolfenstein to COD totally discredits anything they say, ever.

Would love if it was Wolfenstein, heard great things.

That's one of those 'pluck names of games from me hole' clickbait articles that always appear before the official announcement. I wouldn't pay any attention to it.
“Wolfenstein: New Order” is a first person shooting gameplay which is comparable to other firing gameplays like "Call of Duty" and “Titanfall."

    'Firing gameplays'? Wtf?!?!

Also the fact Gravity Rush 2 is not out till January is another nail in the coffin there.

Well it is a FPS so same genre. :)
At work so haven't read the article, but does it seriously say Gravity Rush 2?
Since that's not out until next year

They were saying a demo of GR2 could quite possibly might have a chance of being potentially maybe included because 'the game isn’t available worldwide, yet its playable to some Asian countries'!!!.

Looking forward to Invisible Inc, saves me E20 by not having to get it on Steam, you can easily get 15 hours plus out of it.

VVVVVV is quite addictive if you have the Vita.

Well, least Hyper Void is VR :(

Nothing interested in Fursona Diablo and i already have Invisible Inc and didn't really like it at all.

Yeah, don't think anyone will take issue this time if I bitch about the monthly games. :pac:

Seriously though, a shocking lineup for the most important month of the year, what are they actually at? That won't entice new PS4 owners one bit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,101 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

From a quick google search, Invisible Inc looks like a Transistor clone. So much so that I'm surprised they didn't get a letter from Supergiant Games. Doubt it'll be as good as Transistor though.

Stories looks like it might be a bit of fun.

Hyper Void looks like garbage. Hot stinking garbage.

They sold more consoles this month than any month since launch.

The thing is still flying off the shelf. Once that slows down i presume the AAA games will come.

I'm usually not one to complain about the games but in recent months i'm lucky if i bother to play even one of the games on offer properly. The rest get deleted after maybe 15 minutes.

Happy to get 4 Vita games to arse about with, particularly VVVVV, but overall there's nothing amazing about that list at all. I'm not complaining but I'd say that's the worst month all year.

Even though there's 5 games available on PS4 there, the only one I'll be downloading is Hyper Void, purely because of it's VR compatibility. Otherwise I wouldn't be bothered.
