Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Old software game for Countdown.

    Came across this on YouTube, its a PC game of Countdown from 1994. If they had the technology then to analyse the numbers to see if the target could be reached, is there really a need for a human like Carol Vorderman or Rachel Riley to be in charge of the numbers? You could argue that the computer can do it all and that you only need someone to compare an answer to that of the computer to make sure its similar. You don't in theory need a human to check if it can be done.

    I have the app on my phone and it also does the same thing. I can see in a few years Countdown not needing any human hosts!!

    I'd imagine they wanted a presenter, because it's a TV show, and supposed to be entertainment. People are less likely to watch, if there wasn't someone with big tits or great legs, etc. appearing somewhere along the way. Same as a lot of TV, in general.

    I don't think it was to do, so much, with explaining the maths (though of course, it is presented in a way that makes it an amazing maths feat, to the general population, myself included, whose maths wouldn't be anywhere near as good).
