Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

What's Happening Here? [False Widows... I think]

    Any budding arachnologists able to tell me exactly what's going on here? I found these charming individuals in our plastic outdoor garden game storage box, which has been closed for a month or two but it's otherwise totally dry. There doesn't seem to be any webbing around, although honestly I haven't been *that* brave to start examining the box in closer detail :)

    I'm not sure if it's a male and female or simply two females of different (st)ages, etc.? Or what's underneath them / what's with the carcass nearby. Seems odd to me to see two spiders chilling out together, they're completely motionless.

    I'd like to safely relocate them elsewhere for obvious reasons!

    My understanding is that False Widows are non native. They are a threat to our own native spiders, and they can (and do) give a nasty bite to humans.

    Any found in my house/garden/shed are immediately dispatched to the spider afterlife.


    Its different approach for non false Widows.....
    I'm afraid of spiders, but I'm the one called to remove any from the house, and they are then safely removed over the front or back garden wall. I'm convinced that I've caught the same one more than once:eek:.

    Wow, so there's a difference. Never knew that. Have to try to make sure I'm not eliminating the wrong one so.

    In this case, it seems to me that Wet Daddy has the eh, less welcome variety. (well, less welcome in my house or shed, for sure).

    Son is home after 10 years in Japan. He is ABSOLUTELY terrified of spiders, a phobia he developed over there. Don't know if they have man eaters or what :eek::eek:
