Bad news everyone. Had no time to do any work on the jeep this weekend.:(

I did a track day though and also viewed a car that I think will be the next project :D

This time I am posting here with good news!!! :D:D

Over the last 2 weekends a bit more work has been done. Basically the first weekend was spent disconnecting a few more bits and pieces. Wiring, handbrake cables, exhaust and a few other odds and ends. Then this weekend just gone was spent taking the body off the chassis. What would have taken 20 minutes with a proper lift but took the whole weekend without!! Admittedly I had some other stuff to do, did't just work on the jeep all day. anyway, pictures!

Exhaust off. Replaced at some stage as the manufacture date is 14th week 1999. I'll probably clean it up and reuse it.

Mastercylinder removed from the pedal box and fire wall. Again this will probably be reused.

Love it. You could nearly have done with a forklift there to be honest!!

Can't wait to see it all finished and shiny and then go mud plugging.

You're doing Grade A work man, great to see!

Quadrifoglio Verde (or however that lad spells his user name!) found a link to it. Couldn't find it there when I looked. According to him I was the last poster in the thread asking for advice on where to start with my project :P On;y getting around to actually starting now :D

    What's the plans for her?
Your's is in great nick compared to the few that I've looked at; either rusted away or modified for off-roading so to make 'em unsuitable for normal use.

It's not actually too bad for one of these rust wise! Definitely not beyond saving. The plan is to restore it to road going condition. No lift kit or massive wheels or anything like that. Fairly close to OEM.

    In more detail the plan is to;

    - 4 new shocks and all the bushes replaced in the suspension.

    - Clean up the chassis and fill it with some sort of cavity wax. (Brand/type of wax to be confirmed still).

    - Paint the chassis and all the running gear, suspension etc.

    - Clean up and do a few little jobs to the engine.

    - Get the body fixed up. Not too sure on what exactly that will involve yet. Watch this space!

    - Clean up the interior a bit. Couple of new bits and pieces etc.

It's all still fairly open ended and I'll sort of see how it goes. The thread won't end until it's taxed insured, NCTed and on the road

Thanks! Was really fun to take the body off, not a job I had done before. Did't get anything done today as I was nursing a hangover :p. I have Monday off work so should get a good bit of stuff done Sunday and Monday.

Should make replacing all the suspension etc much easier as well as any other chassis maintenance needed :)

Wow i never seen this until it was mentioned in the thread of the year thread!
Amazing work man, keep it up this is great stuff :)

    Cheers man :)

Myself and 166man took the 4 shocks, the tow bar and the fuel tank off the chassis the other day. Some slow progress is being made!

The next thing I want to get done is to get the body out of the shed and the chassis in the space that the body is currently in. I have a trailer that the body can be put on buy I'm missing a few lads to help lift the body on to it. 4 people could lift the body but it's getting 4 people here on a day with reasonable weather etc... Soon hopefully.

Well it's funny that you say it but I am actually looking for some folks to help lift the body onto the trailer so it can be taken out of the shed. It's looking like that might be happening on Sunday the 10th. 166man, DGT (an old poster from on here) and hopefully quadrifoglio verde too will be coming and helping. I haven't had the chance to ask if QV is free yet though. More hands will be needed though, I was going to ask a couple of my other friends if they could help too.

If any posters from here want to come and help with the project and don't mind giving up some of their Sunday please come and help!!! If any of you are interested at all please drop me a PM and we'll see what happens.

It would be spiritual indeed. return to it's birthplace :p

You can have a door for it too! It would be awesome if you could make it:)

I'm in Ashford, Wicklow. It's probably a decent enough spin for you but it would be very much appreciated if you could come too :)

Sorry Ded_Zebra doubt I would be able to make it that far although I do love Wicklow. Best of luck with the build though am really looking forward to seeing this one.

Not a bother at all. Maybe some other time if you're ever in the area on a weekend.

Was only in Ashford yesterday Dz. I came on here tonight though to tell you, there is an identical to yours (pre-resto) Samurai going around Clontarf. I saw it today and tried getting a pic for you but couldn't stop.

Ah you should have dropped me a PM I would have made tea :D

I would love to see a picture of that one if you see it again! Is it identical to mine in terms of colour etc? I have seen a dark grey one with a blue decal around Donnybrook a couple of times. A 1992 one I think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Yep it looks to be the same colour as yours, a nice dark blue. It was parked up near St anne's park but I couldn't pull over anywhere for a pic, will keep an eye out for it again. It looked properly rough and ready too so whoever is driving it deserves a tip of my hat at least.

    Mine's black :P

I would be nearly tempted to just drive around the area and look for that lol. Starting this project has made me a proper hardcore enthusiast for theses little jeeps again :o

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Haha you know it very well might be black! I only got a quick look at it and thought of yours and this thread. If you're ever in the area and wondering I saw it on the Vernon ave side of St annes park, I will keep my eyes peeled anyway!

Finally it's update time! Took a long time to get this image hosting sorted but i hope it works now.

The chassis went for a little drive once separated from the chassis.

    IMG_3360_zpsxd9ilptc.jpg

Years of oil spewing out of the distributer drive.

    IMG_3363_zpscse3ysca.jpg

    Filth everywhere

    IMG_3364_zpsaufaaehi.jpg

Gunk and some pre-cleaner to tackle the oil and the dirt. Pressure washer and scrubbing brushes too!

    IMG_3362_zpspqngjicg.jpg

    All cleaned up!

Next few pictures might not be in exact order but it won't reply matter. The body was up on blocks which made it tricky to get out of the shed. Many weekends were spent trying to think through how to get it out. While that was being thought through work was still being done!

    Lovely clean gearbox:)

    IMG_3371_zpsmxzzw3qj.jpg

    Gearbox off.

    IMG_3373_zpsy697o4sz.jpg

    Transfer box off too.

    IMG_3374_zpslutp910n.jpg

Then myself and a friend/boardsie worked at taking the shocks off. Bonus points of you recognise him,

    IMG_3643_zps6sfmfb50.jpg

Then myself and (mostly) the same boards above come up with an engineering solution to get the body out of the shed. We disassembled the engine crane and then lowered the body onto the base trolly bit. It was a bit touch and go lowering it onto the trolly for a while with the jacks but the 4 of us there managed to keep it under control.

Here it is lowered onto the trolly

    IMG_3684_zpsotns6qfc.jpg

    And another.
