Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    That W123 looks factory fresh, and as for the Amphicar, that is indeed a rare spot. Was it on display there, or was the restaraunt waiting for high tide :D

    here's a few from the Patricks Day parade in Greystones..
    The 911 is Terry Jacksons.
    The W116 wasn't in the parade, and is an occasional sighting - I've posted it before, I think someone mentioned it belongs to the owner of Otto parts??
    That V8 thrums along beautifully, and still has serious road presence

    I drove that W116 in 2015. It was owned by a friend of mine in Sligo. It was owned from new by a businessman outside London. It was very rarely used. (48,000 miles IIRC) My friend bought it from the estate when your man died. There was hardly 100 miles put on it here till the present owner bought it. I posted pics of it further back here. I've a few more pics. I'll have a look later.

    That Mercedes was special. Like a 2019 absolutely immaculate paintwork and lovely interior.
    I never saw an Amphicar outside of a show. It wasn't outside the restaurant the day before or today so I presume it drove there and away.
    It was another example of a craftsman restorer. Couldn't be faulted even the brass propellers were polished to the jaws of death!
    According to Wikipedia there was less than 4000 built and they reckon only about
    500 survive.
    There is one in similar condition currently for sale in Lisbon asking €85,000.

    Pity? Why though? Its a funny rationale I hear from time to time and I always wonder why?

    Ireland has a very bizzarre relationship with cars, ones which dont benefit the car enthusiast at all. We talk about bog spec cars and the like and it still happens to this day.

    Still happening is people travelling to source a better equipped car thats on offer in UK than cannot be found in Ireland.

    Same with classics, some guys version of 'done deal mint' in Ireland is a joke. The availability of certain models in Ireland is non existent, and this leads to sourcing elsewhere.

    For all of us this as car enthusiasts regardless of era this shoudl be a good thing, the broader a spectrum of cars/types/models are now closer to home.

    So again, Im wondering why use the term 'pity' or why do you feel down about this? Im genuinely curious?

    Does your level of 'classic car enthusiast' depend on the registration plate or actually depend on the type/model that 'does' it for you?

    I think peoples reasons for wanting a classic car can be very different, for some it's about the style, for others it's about the engine for more it's about nostalgia and a cars history is quite important to that. I've spent a bit of time researching my cars previous owners and where it had lived which I don't think I'd be bothered about if the car originated in the UK.
    For me it's not the be all and end all but it does add a little something.

    I don't think he's 'looking down' on anybody, more a case of 'it's a pity we didn't look after the cars we already had, which would have saved us the bother of having to source them elsewhere'.
    Ireland has/had a strong tradition of car ownership down through the years, the car I pictured has been more of less in the same family since new.
    Anybody with the means can buy a car from where ever they like, but seeing as we assembled VW's, Fiats, Fords, Renaults and many more besides in this country, it is a 'pity' that we end up importing cars that at one time were here in abundance.

    Looking for a used car here - classic or not - can be a depressing exercise due to how a lot of cars are poorly looked after. The UK is pretty much always a better market to look at due to economy of scale and the fact that the Brits tend to look after their cars better in general.

    Even looking at used modern stuff in non-main dealers here, you'd wonder what the hell people do with their cars here sometimes.

    As for history - it's great to get a history and story with a classic car, but it wouldn't bother me whether that story was here or across the water. I've had chats on Facebook with the previous owner of my car and long conversations with the specialist who I bought the car from before I headed across to see it. I think you're more likely to get that kind of service in the UK than here to be honest.

    Its a pity that so many of our own 'home grown' classics were left go to rot, or were sent to the crusher due to silly incentive schemes. We then end up having to go to the UK to import them.

    I don't look down on anyone for anything, my own MX5 was sourced from the UK.

    993 is a turbo, not sure about the MR2.
    The Capri was across the road but the pictures were not taken on the same day.
    The quattro is on display in Audi waterford. I always drool over it when getting the wife's car serviced. It's the nicest car in the showroom, despite being surrounded by all manner of luxury motors! I have more pics of it somewhere.

    weekend sightings..

    The Jag is on Irish plates and was fairly moving along the M50/M11 yesterday.
    The Manta is a regular sight around north Wicklow, he doesn't hang around either :cool:
