it's a bit OT, but another feat of precision flying which seemed not to get a lot of traction here when it happened (and was awarded an international award) was in 2014 when the crew of rescue 118 who hovered for 20 minutes, at night, in 32 knot/60km/h winds, half a rotor width from a cliff face, while rescuing an injured climber in the bluestacks.

Here's one that always used to cause a row:

"What's the shortest regular scheduled flight from Dublin that lands outside the EU?"

I couldn't figure that out how that was the answer until I copped they are including goals scored in the preliminary rounds as well.

    Isle of Man?

The Douglas/Isle of Man question (if that's indeed the correct answer!) is a good question, but was probably better before Brexit, when people would probably have been pondering over whether places like Switzerland or Norway were closer to Dublin.

Now with the Brits outside the EU, am guessing many people would go for Liverpool as the answer. That means they're thinking closer to home anyway, and therefore more chance of them thinking of the Isle of Man.

Anyway, maybe this was asked before here, but.....where did the first ever Ryanair flight depart from?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,939 ✭✭✭3DataModem

    Isle of Man?

    Yep.

Note: I guess in a quiz Douglas would be accepted, but you don't fly to Douglas when you fly to the Isle of Man.

..where did the first ever Ryanair flight depart from?

    Great one.

I read the book pretty recently, I think it was Waterford (or possibly Cork)... it definitely wasn't Dublin.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭Uncle Pierre

You're right that it wasn't from Dublin. Won't actually give the answer here yet though, in case anybody else wants to have a stab at it....

Heard recently on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire:

Which of these philosophers tutored Alexander the Great?

    A. Plato
    B. Thales
    C. Aristotle
    D. Socrates

Wonder would many get it without the multi-choice element.

    Knock Airport?

Circled the area and landed where it had taken off from?

Pretty sure the first commerical/charter flights were to Rome. Think the passengers on the very first one consisted largely of Monsignor Horan and others on a pilgrimage.

If you mean the very first flight, there's probably a good chance that one took off, circled round a bit, and then landed there again all right.... :)

where did the very first flight *to* knock airport land?
    wait, no, that's not right...

The irony being that Knock is a place of pilgrimage in it's own right.

...which is a large part of the reason he wanted an airport there in the first place. :)

May as well confirm at this stage that the first Ryanair flight was indeed out of Waterford. It flew to Gatwick.

According to this story, the plane itself was so small that cabin crew weren't allowed to be any taller than 5' 2". That would surely count as some sort of employment discrimination today!

I remember this one. I think the guy worked it out by dates. He knew the date order of the philosophers and matched that with Alexander. Seriously impressive knowledge and smarts to do that. Also, it was a very valuable question, 500K?

Pretty sure Lake Baikal is the answer to one of them.....
Deepest / Lake Michigan for largest?

    Baikal to all three.

I know this as I've been there. Siberians will proudly tell you it has (supposedly) more water in it than the 5 Great Lakes put together.
