    O'Neill and O'Donnell fled to Rome via Belgium, Western Germany, Switzerland and over the Alps. They travelled in Germany and Switzerland through places they deemed unfriendly (Protestant) and lost most of their gold crossing the Alps.
    Question: Why didn't they travel through France avoiding hostility and the Alps?

    Were they following a route similar to the Spanish Road perhaps? It sounds like it
