Side Hinged Garage Door question

Opening we have is 8ft high, approx 8'6 wide.

If we go for a wooden side hinged door (with window) in the door - is an 8ft door too large?

Would we better with 7ft door and window over it.

I think the first is nicer, but I have concerns the door would be too heavy.

No carpenters on here ! An 8 foot door is fine as long as the hinges are robust enough to support it. You may need to put a pivot hinge on the bottom edge.

Is it a single door, or double doors, 8ft high by 4ft 3", would be no problem, but 8ft 6" wide would put a lot of pressure on the frame, hinges and the door itself, also it could be dangerous in windy weather. An Iroko door 8ft by 8ft 6" would weigh 120 - 150 kgs.

Three ( 3 per door) @ 36” Heavy duty straight or cranked strap hinges ( hook & band hinges ) with 3/4” eye mated to 3/4” gate hanger pins.
Should work just fine on heavy doors.

Possibly a better weight transferring method would be to use two of the strap hinges near the top say 150mm down and another 150mm below that. Then for the bottom install a spud stone to transfer the weight of the door to the ground.

Actually after thinking about that with a spud on the bottom the hinges on top wouldn't work as the piviot centers would be different and the door wouldn't move .
You'd have to install a piviot hinge to the head of the door and frame head to maintain the lock it points remain the same when opening
