Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Do I need to turn gas/water off?

    I won't be in my property for 2 weeks over the Christmas break. I am wondering do I need to leave the gas set to come on so pipes won't frezze (I know you need to do this with oil but unsure with gas). Also do I need to switch water off? It's a ground floor apartment. thanks for the help am clueless about thsi type of thing. would rather not have to set the gas to come on when I am not here as my bill is going to be quite big anyway!!

    They expect a thaw at the weekend.

    No particular reason to turn off the gas - methane doesn't freeze until -161C. :)

    If its a modern apartment, it shouldn't be too bad, as there will be heat gain from the other apartments and the mass of the building will act as insulation. I suspect the greatest risk will come from leaks in the apartments above you. If there is an apartment-specific shut-off valve, that could be turned off, but not if you leave the gas heating on.

    Radiators are a lower risk than your hot and cold water systems, as it isn't pressurised to the same extent.

    Make sure you close all windows, doors, curtains, etc. Possibly use an electric heater with a frost setting.

    Is there someone who can check on the place form time to time? Especially when it is thawing out.

    thanks for that Victor. My mum had mentioned switching the water off and having the gas on which I didnt really want to do. thanks for the help!

    i am in the same situation but in a terraced house

    i am setting the timer to come on for an hour every twelve hours.

    along with lights on timers
