Looking for some advice....my mother really likes my car. She has a really old Micra and wants to change. Had a small hit in it recently and doesn't really like driving it anymore. The main problem is the car is manual

She lives in country but I done some looking and probably biggest round trip would be 60km. She wants something small and 4 door as current car has 2 doors and she hates that

She only has budget of 5-6k max

I talked to Phil and he mentioned a Peugeot Ion. Just wondering what other options might be out there? Budget is a bit low for Leaf

I'm only seeing this now. I think the realistic option is a Leaf....but the budget does need to come up a little. You've seen that a bargain can be had if you're quick to shoot at the right time. There is one on DD for €6500. You would get at least €500 off that and it's only down 1 bar. Might be worth a look and you may even get it for €5500 if you play your cards right. It has no mention of a granny charger.....but just maybe you could get the HCP thrown into the deal if it's not being used for another EV.

I seen that one but would the mileage be a concern? it is high at 104km. I know probably my mother will not be doing big mileage but is that high for electric?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,886 ✭✭✭stesaurus

Mileage has very little bearing on EVs. I'd probably be more worried with a low mileage as it could have been left sitting idle in a high/low state for long periods. Either way get a battery check done and see.

Correct me if wrong, to do battery check I need to buy little dongle(can't remember name) and plug into car and then I can check from phone?

Anything from late 2013 Nissan Leaf will be ideal then. Are you open to buying in the UK? Make sure the battery is not leased. There are a few threads here you should read up on and you will have all the answers you need. Search my Thread history and you will find a couple of relevant Leaf threads from when I bought recently. Also kceire bought one in Scotland from a private seller, so you should check out his thread too.

Will you be able to install a charge point at your house?
e.g. Can you drive your car right up to the house to plug it in?

Do you have a 2nd car in the house?

What is the max daily distance you expect the EV to cover. Sounds like maybe <50km?

Hi yes can install a charge, have driveway. have a diesel estate myself as travel longer to work. at most it will be doing 50km a day. Thinking of getting one in uk, just worried about the drive back now!

You might find that the EV is better suited financially to that car than to the short runs to the school/shop etc.

However, there are no estate EV's so if the estate is important to you you will have to stick with ICE for that for now.

Don't worry about the drive back from the UK. Find the car first and then look at that. Some dealers will deliver it to the port for you. You also have the option of getting it shipped back for a few hundred.

Would you be concerned if car didn't have any service history? talking to guy about Leaf and he says that he isn't aware of any service history and gets it done by Hybrid specialist in area.....

With a Leaf....no, not really. It doesn't require any servicing really. You can check pads, discs and look for signs of crash damage. Once it charges, drives and all the electrics are working as they should, I don't think there is much else to check. The coolant isn't even due yet, is it?

Its gone anyway. Maybe should have moved quicker.

You mention coolant? when does that need to be done?

I have read that the battery coolant needs changing every 100k....but in the USA they say 200k? So, not really sure about the difference.

There's a 1.5 Gen Acenta on DD for €7,777. Looks like small dent on drivers side quarter panel between wheel arch and door. It was a Taxi for 2 years but it has 6.6 OBC. Looks very clean.

Would take a look at that and see what price she can be got at. Would pay 7k. Using the minor damage and high mileage (155k) to beat the price down.

I'd get the car check done. Check for crash history etc.

That's a good price and still 12 battery bars. But you never know how close you are to loosing 1 bar. A leaf Spy test would be very interesting to see though U.K Taxi Leafs are known to go beyond 160,000 Kms with all 12 bars.

If the car checks out and the damage isn't severe then it would make a seriously cheap car.

See this is the thing, these cars are so completely under valued in the eyes of the public it's shocking, with a normal ICE car you'd be a lot more worried about whether the car was properly serviced or not. With the EV it will most likely be as mechanically sound as the day it was bought or close enough with the exception of the battery of course. But I wouldn't consider that a mechanical part but obviously a major component.

I know on a standard car you can pay a few hundred quid, drop off to garage and they will give it a run over. I guess this is not available on electric yet?

I am no mechanic etc. so would prefer someone who knows what the crack is to check over.....

Other option is just to buy via Phil but majority of his cars out of budget at the min

  • Posts: 21,179 ✭✭✭✭ Lachlan Teeny Pillar

I'm sure you could arrange it for Nissan to check it out. I don't see why not.

There is so little to check. Leafspy would tell you more about the battery health than Nissan, but ask yourself....would you walk away if it was just about to lose a bar? I know I wouldn't.

Checking for crash damage is straight forward. Check that everything is aligned and there are no creases, or bends that don't belong. Check the paint work. Have a look at the brake pads and discs. The suspension is pretty solid on the Leaf, so it would be easy to find a problem on a test drive if there was one. Check for uneven tyre wear. Check that it charges on FCP and slow charger. Make sure all the electrics are working...press EVERY button. Take a good 20 minutes driving it on various roads. Make sure the car regen is working and then hand over your money and tune in your favourite radio station for the free journey home.

You are probably looking at €10,000 for your Leaf. You could advertise it here and mention what 7 seater you are looking for ie make, model, year, value etc.
You never know your luck, someone here might be looking to move from a 7 seater to an EV.

Good quality AND cheap AND 10m!

I don't think you'll get that but it depends on what you consider cheap. :)

Plenty to choose from though and just use parcel motel for the free UK delivery...
