Louth Contemporary Music Society in association with Drogheda Arts Festival
    presents Arabian Waltz
with Rabih Abou Khalil , the EQ Ensemble and Elisaveta Blumina
in St.Peter’s Church of Ireland Drogheda
    4 May 2012 at 8pm.
    OUD-071-580x828.jpg

The shrewd, witty and inventive Abou Khalil - a world musician years before the phrase became a label -makes the hot, staccato Middle Eastern flavour and the seamless grooves of jazz mingle as if they were always meant to. John Fordham The Guardian

For nearly a quarter century, Lebanese-born oud master and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil has defied all of the artificial boundaries to create a musical world entirely his own. With his first Irish commission for Louth Contemporary Music Society, Rabih once again proves to be a truly visionary artist.

The concert will feature a magical programme of music ranging from Elisaveta Blumina performing piano works by Fazil Say and Alan Hovhaness to The EQ Ensemble performing John Surman’s Mimosa and Leylek Geldi for string quartet and bass. Rabih will perform solo on the oud and then will be joined by the EQ Ensemble for the world premiere of a new commission for string quartet, bass and oud. The new commission, funded by the Arts Council, will receive its world premiere on 4 May 2012 as part of the Drogheda Arts Festival.

Born and raised in the cosmopolitan climate of Beirut in the sixties and seventies, Rabih Abou-Khalil leaned to play the oud at the age of four. In the Arab world, this instrument is as popular as the guitar or the piano in the West and is the composer's instrument par excellence. An oud is a form of lute or mandolin played principally in Arab countries. The Lebanese civil war forced him to leave his country in 1978 to study classical flute in the German city of Munich, where he was tutored at the Munich Academy of Music by Walther Theurer.

    Tickets for the concert cost €10 and are available from www.ctb.ie ( 0818 205 205)or the festival box office 353 (0)41 983 3946 or at www.droghedaartsfestival.ie.
LCMS will hold a wine reception at the interval for all ticket holders.

Rabih Abou Khalil’s first Irish commission was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
The Arabian Waltz concert is funded by Create Louth and the Arts Council. Louth Contemporary Music Society is supported by the Arts Council.

The Drogheda Arts Festival, the first festival of the summer, will run from 3rd – 7th May with new theatre, music, family events, visual arts and lots more.

Hi, my name is Patrick Wall and am a blues/oldtime country singer, I am interested in any opportunities with regard to playing in blues sessions, gigs or forming a band that can play the songs of Moon Mullican, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Monroe, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and similar.

Also, someone who can give me and/or my band some gigs or sessions. Good rates are given by me for solo un-miked sessions where I sing and play guitar and welcome other singers and musicians to join in as well. Any help is much appreciated. Below are my music sites:

    Introducing "Joker Malea".....
This is the name of the Jazz Quintet led by 21 year old Swiss-born Michael Gilsenan. They are due to arrive in Ireland on Sunday 27th January and will play the first of their Irish Jazz gigs in Trim Castle Hotel probably between 5 and 7pm on that day. It is not planned to have either an admission or a cover charge, so if Jazz happens to "crank your gears" don't waste this good opportunity to indulge your passion.
Michael (grandson) and his friends are all students of the Swiss Jazz School, so they are all serious musicians, and all intend to carve out a career in music. They are coming to Ireland only because of the "Trim connection", so I hereby stake my claim to getting "The Gathering" off the ground in Trim...!!:)

    ‘TheGINAJazz’:
    Gina Pukaite LT/IE (vocal/lyrics)
    Gediminas Karkauskas LT/IE (piano)
    Cormac O'Brien IE (double bass)
    Stephen Davis UK (drums)

    Press review:
...'Dynamic drum pulsation, soft and transparent piano solos. And of course vocalist Gina (Grazina Pukaite)
....she was not dominating…In other words, she is the jewel of the trio, that is rarely found.

Connections with classical music and spoken word in a “Street View catcher” captured the attention and reminded
me of the Gil Scott Heron tune ’The revolution will not be televised’. It’s really rare when acoustic subtle performances get
rapturous applause. The Gina Jazz trio achieved it and completely captured everyone’s attention.

At the Final composition ‘II Easy’ ....Gediminas Karkauskas piano passages made me to look at my colleague nearby
    questioning-is this the new
Esbjorn Svensson? Others had the same thoughts about similarity with the famous Swedish pianist.
But this cannot be considered copying. It is born of a shared level of performance that is electric, a performance
that is at one with its audience The Gina Jazz trio found a way not only to Broma Jazz listener’s ears, but hearts too.

...they have left stage after loud and sustained applause. Vocalist Gina promised to come they would be back
next year'-by J.Gricevicius "Jazz Jungtys" organiser, Broma Jazz'14 Festival critic (LT)

We're very happy to announce our first ever gig at the legendary jazz and blues venue, JJ's Smyth.

So we thought how can we get people together make them have a great time and can help us with our future recording........the answer is a gig

We've decided that all the money raised in our upcoming gig in JJ's will go straight to recording of our second album, so we want to invite all of you to come to our gig and support us with this humble request.

We will play the second album entirety and a couple from the new CD
