Getting tattoo faded before cover up

I got a tattoo done a few months ago which I’m not to happy with it. I’d like to get a cover up tattoo but artist said id need to get some laser work done first to lighten it. How many sessions on average would be required? The tattoo is a light dark/black colour and about 2.5 inches height and length on outer arm.
