    Unusually mild winter of 88/89

    December Mild and dry
    January Very Mild
February Mild start- cold last week

Mean temperatures were above normal by 1.8 °C
to 2.5°C. At a few stations the winter of 74/75
was as mild or milder but at most stations, having
periods of record of between 25 and 45 years, it
was the mildest winter on record.
    At Roche's
Point the winter of 1942/43 (mean temperature
8.6°C) was milder but at both Cahirciveen and
Malin Head it was the mildest winter since
recording began over 100 years ago; at Malin
Head the previous record, 7.2 °C set in 1932, was
exceeded by a margin of 0,8°C. While no daily
records were broken, absolute maxima for this
winter were 13°C or above at all our stations, the
highest being the 13.9°C recorded at Shannon
Airport on January 27th. The lowest temperature
of winter was the modest -5.2 °C recorded at
Mulltngar on 24th February. The number of days
with airfrost was notably low; Kilkenny with 16
had the highest total but this is only half its
    average value.

Rainfall totals ranged from 420 mm at
Cahirciveen to 111 mm at Dublin Airport.

Percentage totals exceeded 115% of normal in
parts of the west but were less than 70% over
much of the south and east where it was the driest
winter for 8 to 13 years; however at Dublin
Airport it was the driest for 25 years. In parts of
the west north and midlands it was the wettest
    winter for5 years.

Sunshine totals ranged from 221 hours at Dublin
Airport to 106 hours at Claremorris. Percentage
totals varied from 119% to 125% in the Dublin
area, where it was the sunniest winter since
1960/61, to less than 70% near the west coast
where it was the dullest winter for 5 to 13 years.

Highest gust of winter was 86 knots recorded at
Malin Head on February 13th; elsewhere highest
gusts ranged 50 to 70 knots.

A lot of that Winter is similar to this Winter. It could be tough for this Winter to be as mild as listed but Kerry will have a damn good go. The Western side of Ireland is still on for a remarkably mild Winter but the East will have a slightly cooler one after a cool first two weeks of February. Mullingar at -6.3 will be the lowest temperature of this season and I would say Valentias 13.9c would be the mildest but there is more mild air next week so we could get 14 there then. Sligo has had only 3 air frosts this Winter so far and the lowest temperature in the town is -1.9c compared to last years -9.4c. High is still Christmas day at 13.1c.
Sunshine has been nearly non existant in Sligo this Winter.

Historically the Winters of the 90s were very mild too.

I really hoped nobody else noticed that. :D

That record could be under threat if this mornings ECM verifies for next week - at this stage I'm just hoping that the summer turns out as good as 89:rolleyes:';)
